ABOUT DR. DOUG BOND
Dr. Doug Bond (Ph.D. University of Hawaii at Manoa, 1985) conducted research at Harvard University from 1988 to 2006. Dr. Bond is a Lecturer in Extension, teaching regularly (since 1994) at the Harvard University Division of Continuing Education, including a class on International Relations, a research Proseminar for prospective ALM students and a course on Preventive Measures with a focus on conflict early warning systems in Africa.
For eighteen years, initially as a Visiting Scholar and later as an administrative staff member, he led the development of a Protocol for the Assessment of Nonviolent Direct Action (PANDA) at Harvard to assess nonviolent direct action globally. Bond’s research involved the monitoring of global news wire and other reports using automated event-coding technology. The effort was guided by the project’s initial PANDA events data protocol that later came to be called IDEA, for Integrated Events Data Analysis. The protocol facilitates the identification and tracking of conflict situations before they erupt into violence. His research also included the design, development, deployment and operational support of several field based security incident and peace monitoring systems used by International Governmental and Nongovernmental Organizations.
In need of automated tools to advance his research at Harvard Dr. Bond founded Virtual Research Associates, Inc. (VRA) in March 1996 to design and build an advanced automated natural language, parsing system. He has served as President since the company’s founding. This patented, frame-parsing system, known as the VRA _Knowledge Manager, supports the development of data required to analyze news and other reports on volatile conflict situations throughout the world. VRA engages in the analysis of news and other reports with a focus on identifying, tracking and assessing the risks posed by evolving situations of social, political and economic conflict. The system also supports cognitive mapping, operational code and other analyses that require machine understanding of text-based messages.
From 1985 until 1988 Dr. Bond taught at Kyungnam University in Masan, Korea and served as a Research Fellow at the University's Institute for Far Eastern Studies in Seoul. He also lectured at Yonsei University's International Division and at the University of Maryland's Asian Division, both in Seoul.
He earned his PhD with distinction in Political Science at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 1985. He also earned an MA in International Communications from the University of Hawaii in 1980, and a BS degree in Technical Communications at the University of Minnesota in 1977.
Dr. Bond’s publications include two articles on automated events data development published in the Journal of Conflict Resolution, in 1997 and in 2001. Another article on the IDEA protocol appeared in the Journal of Peace Research in 2003. In addition, a book chapter co-authored by Bond on Lessons Learned from the IGAD-CEWARN project appeared in 2005. Another article co-authored by Bond on the use of GIS technology on the same project was published in Political Geography in 2007.
