Event Details

Join us in the Elkins Room of the Rare Book Department for a discussion of Oliver Twist; or The Parish Boy's Progress, Charles Dickens's second novel, published in monthly parts from February 1837 - April 1839.  In Oliver Twist Dickens began his life-long campaign to improve social conditions for very poor people in England.  The book is full of melodrama and unlikely coincidence, but it blazes with the sincerity of Dickens’s conviction that the treatment of the poor was a disgrace to his country.
