Event Details

Led by our Dickens Literary Ambassador Edward Pettit, we retrace Dickens's 1842 visit to the City of Brotherly Love and learn about Charles Dickens's many stateside adventures, including a visit with Philly's own Edgar Allan Poe.

A minibus will take us along a route past many of the places the celebrated author visited when he was in town including the Pennsylvania Hospital, the United States Hotel (now the Omni), and the Merchant's Exchange. We'll even take a ride by the Poe House on Spring Garden Street where we'll hear about the historic meeting of the two great writers.

Stops will include the Fairmount Water Works and a guided tour of Eastern State Penitentiary, where Dickens spent many hours.

Meet at the Free Library Rare Book Department on the 3rd Floor in Parkway Central Library. Arrive a bit early, and you'll have a chance to view our current exhibition: "At Home on the Stage: Charles Dickens and the Theatre."

Seating is limited.
