Device Design Day
Friday, August 5, 2011 from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM (PDT)
San Francisco, CA
Kicker Studio presents Device Design Day, a one-day conference for professionals who create consumer electronics, appliances, mobile devices, and objects with embedded technology. It brings together designers, technologists, and product developers for a multi-perspective conversation and expert content on making better products and more intuitive tools for people through technology.
This conference is an opportunity for manufacturers, technology developers and entrepreneurs to hear how design thought leaders see the future of devices. Attendees will get insight from an amazing cast of thought leaders presenting their ideas around making better products and more intuitive tools for people, along with lots of opportunities to network and meet new people. This year there will also be a "Robot Petting Zoo," a playground for interacting with robots, prototypes and experimental tools from talented makers, including Mike Winters and Almost Scientific. Lunch and an afternoon snack will be served on San Francisco Art Institute's beautiful Quad, with a beautiful view of the city and the bay. And, lastly, the event is immediately followed by Kicker Studio's Third Anniversary Party from 5:30 - 9:30 PM.
We've got a great line up presentations for the day. Mike Kruzeniski from Microsoft's Windows Phone Team and Kicker's very own Jody Medich will each discuss the new opportunities presented by emerging and maturing technologies. Leila Takayama of Willow Garage will examine design challenges around robots as personal devices. Robert Brunner of Ammunition, Branko Lukic from NONOBJECT, and T-Mobile's Charles Goran will explore how people relate to objects themselves: the ideas they convey, possibilities behind them, and how experiences can evolve and shift people's perceptions. And we'll consider the role of design in creating risk-averse systems and regulated devices, from the collaborative process of designing medical equipment with Liz Bacon, to the history of Mission Control Center, with NASA's Cori Schauer. And that's just the tip of the iceberg!
