Tim Gill will discuss Longitude Measurement at Sea. Hundreds of sailors were being lost because the ship captains could not accurately determine the east/west positions of their ship with sufficient accuracy to avoid hitting rocky coastlines. A prize of $15M (in today's dollars) was the reward from the British government for a practical solution to this classic 19th century problem.
