Event Details

You are invited to be part of this historic event to bring together design educators and designers to shape the future of preK-12 design education.

This hybrid conference/un-conference will provide speakers as well as a forum to allow discussion groups to evolve. During the conference segment,  speakers will present on topics such as the STEM to STEAM initiative, gamification, design history, and design thinking. There will be planned workshops on drawing for design, model-making, video production, the Visioneer competition, and how to create a design-based school or program, among others. During the unconference portion on day two, time and meeting space will be provided for anyone to lead sessions on relevant topics, share experiences and knowledge and to be inspired by creative ideas. Unlike the traditional conference format of the first day, the flexible, participant-driven format favors discussion, debate and interactive participation on emerging trends, the latest issues and new projects. YOU build the unconference agenda around your interests, needs and areas of expertise, with interactive participation driving the sessions.
Additionally, the conference will convene leading design education professionals to collaborate on the initiation of design education standards and curriculum for preK-12 education.
Breakfast and Lunch are included both days within the conference fee.

9:00 AM Keynote Speaker – Kevin Werbach, “Gamification”

Kevin Werbach is a leading expert on the business, policy, and social implications of emerging Internet and communications technologies. Werbach is an Associate Professor of Legal Studies and Business Ethics at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. He is also the founder of the Supernova Group, a technology analysis and consulting firm. He advises companies, writes about emerging trends in communications and information technology, and organizes Supernova, a major annual executive technology conference. He co-led the review of the Federal Communications Commission for the Obama-Biden Transition Project.

In For the Win, authors Kevin Werbach and Dan Hunter argue persuasively that gamemakers need not be the only ones benefiting from game design. Werbach and Hunter are lawyers and World of Warcraft players who created the world’s first course on gamification at the Wharton School. In their book, they reveal how game thinking—addressing problems like a game designer—can motivate employees and customers and create engaging experiences that can transform your business.

For the Win reveals how a wide range of companies are successfully using game thinking. It also offers an explanation of when gamifying makes the most sense and a 6-step framework for using games for marketing, productivity enhancement, innovation, employee motivation, customer engagement, and more.

10:00 AM Keynote Speaker – Steven Heller, “Design History”

Steven Heller, the author, co-author, and/or editor of over 100 books on design and popular culture, has worked with a score of publishers and was an art director at the New York Times. Currently, he is co-chair of the MFA Designer as Author Department, Special Consultant to the President of SVA for New Programs, and writes the Visuals column for the New York Times Book Review.

For over two decades he has been contributing editor to PRINT, EYE, BASELINE, and I.D. magazines, has had contributed hundreds of articles, critical essays, and columns (including his interview column "Dialogue" in PRINT) to a score of other design and culture journals.

He has produced or been curator of a number of exhibitions, including "Art Against War," "The Satiric Image: Painters as Cartoonists and Caricaturists," "The Malik Verlag," and "The Art of Simplicissumus: Germany’s Most Influential Satire Magazine," among them. He has organized various conferences, including The School of Visual Arts’ "How We Learn What We Learn," devoted to the future of design education, and the AIGA’s "Looking Closer: Graphic Design History and Criticism."

Heller is also the recipient of the AIGA Medal for Lifetime Achievement in 1999, the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame Special Educators Award in 1996, The Pratt Institute Herschel Levitt Award in 2000, and the Society of Illustrators Richard Gangel Award for Art Direction in 2006.

1. Pamela Pease, Paintbox Press – “The World of Design”

Pamela Pease is creator of the design education website KidsThinkDesign.org, and the Design Dossier series of books on creativity for kids ages 10-15. "Design Dossier: Graphic Design for Kids," was chosen to receive a 2010 Parent's Choice Gold Award. 

The first title in the series, "The World of Design," recently received an American Graphic Design Award from Graphic Design USA, an industry publication.

"Engaging kids in the study of design draws upon skills in math, history, science and art in ways that are relevant to their everyday lives," says Pamela Pease, author and designer and founder of Paintbox Press. "We have obviously tapped into an unfilled niche by introducing the process of innovation to today's creative kids."

2. Karl Kapp, Author – “The Gamification of Learning and Instruction: Game-based Methods and Strategies for Training and Education”

Learning professionals are finding success applying game-based sensibilities to the development of instruction. This is the first book to show how to design online instruction that leverages the best elements of online games to increase learning, retention, and application. It explains how to match different game strategies to types of learning content for the right learning outcome and discusses how gamification techniques can be used in a variety of settings to improve learning, retention and application of knowledge. Supported by peer-reviewed studies and examples from corporations who have adopted game-based learning successfully, the book illustrates how combining instructional design thinking with game concepts can create engaged and interactive learning experiences across a variety of media, from online to face-to-face.

1:30 PM Keynote Speaker – Kevin Henry, “Drawing for Designers”

Kevin Henry is an Associate Professor in the product design program at Columbia College Chicago. His design work has received both the IDEA and the Good Design awards, and he has lectured and conducted workshops in the US, Canada, Europe, and Mexico.

His book, Drawing for Product Designers is both a practical and theoretical guide to the visualization techniques used by contemporary product designers, including freehand sketching, digital rendering, information graphics, and presentation skills. Hundreds of hand-drawn sketches and computer models have been specially created to demonstrate critical geometry and show how to develop sketches into finished illustrations. Practical tutorials give guidance in creating simple and complex forms, as well as rendering and providing context, using scenarios and storyboards. Insightful case studies of leading designers illustrate the full range of different visualization options available.

3:00 PM - Cas Holman, “Imaginative Free Play, Creativity and STEAM”

Cas Holman is a designer of play-things and Assistant Professor of Industrial Design at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). RISD is leading STEAM, an initiative to add Art (and design) to the national educational agenda advocating or more emphasis on STEM subjects. In her teaching and professional practice Holman explores the intersection of play, learning and creativity. Her playful and inventive playgrounds and toys and learning materials can be found in parks, schools, and museums worldwide. Recent projects include the Workyard Kit, a set of oversized wooden planks and connectors designed for Friends of the High Line and currently used on Manhattan's High Line Park. She is currently working with play advocacy group KaBOOM! to bring the Workyard Kit (soon to be known as Rigamajig) to public and private schools across the U.S.

9:00 AM Keynote Speaker – Illah Nourbakhsh, “Robot Futures”

Illah Reza Nourbakhsh is Professor of Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University, where he also directs the Community Robotics, Education, and Technology Empowerment (CREATE) Lab. He is a coauthor of Introduction to Autonomous Mobile Robots (MIT Press) and wrote “Robot Futures”.

With robots, we are inventing a new species that is part material and part digital. The ambition of modern robotics goes beyond copying humans, beyond the effort to make walking, talking androids that are indistinguishable from people. Future robots will have superhuman abilities in both the physical and digital realms. They will be embedded in our physical spaces, with the ability to go where we cannot, and will have minds of their own, thanks to artificial intelligence. They will be fully connected to the digital world, far better at carrying out online tasks than we are. In Robot Futures, the roboticist Illah Reza Nourbakhsh considers how we will share our world with these creatures, and how our society could change as it incorporates a race of stronger, smarter beings. Nourbakhsh imagines a future that includes adbots offering interactive custom messaging; robotic flying toys that operate by means of "gaze tracking"; robot-enabled multimodal, multicontinental telepresence; and even a way that nanorobots could allow us to assume different physical forms. Nourbakhsh follows each glimpse into the robotic future with an examination of the underlying technology and an exploration of the social consequences of the scenario.

Bjarki Hallgrimsson – “Prototyping and Modelmaking for Product Design”

Bjarki Hallgrimsson is a practicing product development consultant and an Associate Professor at the School of Industrial Design, Carleton University, Ottawa. He wrote “Prototyping and Modelmaking for Product Design”

Building prototypes and models is an essential component of any design activity. Modern product development is a multi-disciplinary effort that relies on prototyping in order to explore new ideas and test them sufficiently before they become actual products. A comprehensive modern prototyping approach is crucial to making informed design decisions, and forms a strategic part of a successful designer's toolkit.
