to honor

Denward Collins

Denward, as a fourth generation Hicksville resident, attended Hicksville schools, graduating from High School in 1953. He graduated from the State University of New York Farmingdale in 1955.  He also attended Hofstra University.  Undeniably Denward and his ancestors are part of Hicksville history.

As such, Denward is proud of his 22 years as an active member of the Hicksville Historical Society where he presently serves as Vice President.  He has also participated as a member of its Board of Directors for 11 years.

Denward has also been an active member of the Nassau County Historical Society for 42 years, a board member for 34 years and served as that organization’s President for 19 years.

He is also a proud supporter of other local historical societies throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties as well as the Levittown Public Library where he served 25 years on that institution's Board of Directors and was active on its parent support committees for Levittown Public Schools and for the local Boy Scout Troop.

Denward is also an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church of in Hicksville.

Earlier in Denward’s lifetime he was employed by Laboratory Furniture Co. Inc. (formerly Metalab Equipment Company) 1955-1990 and served with United States Army Reserves for six years.

Denward and his wife Ruth raised two sons, Denward III and Richard and are very proud of their grandchildren, Marykate, Daniel and Jenna, also Hicksville residents.

Part the historian and part the philosopher, Denward often poses and ponders the following questions:

  • Who made our communities what they have become? What were those individual’s lives like?  What were their concerns? How did they influence our communities and how did the communities effect the resident's lives?

Denward also points out that:

  • We cannot predict the future but we can look to the past to see what policies worked to create the greatest free society known to mankind.   I believe the documents from the brilliant minds of our founding fathers (and mothers to be PC) are the source of our success.    Ultimately, it is our individual responsibility to be involved and continue the original policies and principles if we are to survive as a free and independent nation. History has taught us if we ignore our responsibilities, and become complacent, a vacuum will occur and will be filled by those who do not encompass the ideals that we hold as vital to our lives.
