Demystifying the Learning of Verbal Problems
with Hands-On Equations®
Many students struggle with verbal problems. They do not know where to begin. They often give up before trying. Yet, being able to understand and solve verbal problems is essential to success in school mathematics and to success in many technical careers.
After a brief review of how Hands-On Equations is used to solve an equation such as 4x + 3 = 3x + 9, we will consider how problems such as the following can be demystified and made accessible to all students.
- Five times a number, increased by 2, is the same as three times the same number, increased by 12. Find the number.
- James and Jack have the same number of pencils. James has four boxes. Jack has two of the same boxes as James and 6 extra pencils. How many pencils are in each box?
- Karen is 6 years older than twice Pedro's age. If the sum of their ages is 27, how old is each?
- The length of a rectangle is 5 units more than its width. If the perimeter of the rectangle is 64, how long is each?
- Find three consecutive numbers such that twice the sum of the first two numbers is 12 more than the third number.
This webinar is appropriate for teachers of grades 3-8 and teachers of high school students struggling with algebra. Participants will experience a powerful, visual approach to making sense of verbal problems!
