Event Details

Is a quilt a piece of art, a simple craft, an early form of social networking, a business opportunity, or perhaps, all of the above? Join IF University and international quilt expert Shelly Zegart for a fascinating discussion about quilts: a time-honored tradition that has deep connections to history, politics, and culture, and also is a multi-billion-dollar industry with lots of competitors and millions of enthusiasts and collectors worldwide.

“Quilts are our windows into the history, art and politics of this country. However, the subject of quilts and the people who make them is frequently misunderstood as they have long been relegated to discussions of grandma’s patterns and fabric history," explains Zegart.

There is more to quilts than meets the eye: IF University invites you to come piece all the many surprises together here.

Facilitator: Shelly Zegart has spent more than 3 decades researching, documenting, and showcasing the rich heritage of quilting in America. She is the co-founder of The Kentucky Quilt Project, Inc. and The Alliance for American Quilts, and was the Executive Producer and Host for the television documentary, "Why Quilts Matter: History, Art & Politics" which aired on PBS. She is a longtime resident of Louisville.

Suggested preparation: View this trailer available at "Why Quilts Matter: History, Art, & Politics." In-depth information is available through Episode 8: Quilt Nation, 200,000 and Counting of the DVD set, "Why Quilts Matter: History, Art, & Politics" available here.
