Bay checkerspot butterflyIMPORTANT NOTICE

Due to the current drought, there are not enough host plants to sustain the caterpillars, so we have canceled this event indefinitely. If conditions change, we will reschedule. Please check this website periodically for updates.

This is your chance to defy extinction of the Bay checkerspot butterfly, a federally threatened species, from Edgewood County Park and Natural Preserve. By adopting a Bay checkerspot caterpillar and placing it in its new home within the specially restored habitat at Edgewood, you can play an important role in species preservation.

As part of a tightly controlled scientific program, caterpillars are being transferred from another Bay Area locality where there are lots of them, to Edgewood in an effort to re-establish the population that formerly thrived there.

This is a wonderful opportunity for adults and minors accompanied by adults to learn about how plants and animals survive the changing conditions of our environment. Each attendee will be able to select and name a caterpillar and will receive a special Certificate of Adoption.

This event requires walking approximately 3 miles of moderately sloping terrain. You will be off-trail on uneven ground that may be wet or muddy. Bring water, a hat, sturdy shoes, and sunscreen. In order to prevent introducing non-native plant species to this sensitive area, your shoes should be clean of soil and seeds. Minors must be accompanied by an adult.

Meet at the Clarkia Trailhead on Canada Road. If you are coming along I-280, exit at Edgewood Road and head west toward the mountains. Turn left at Canada Road and continue under the freeway overpass. Park on the dirt strip on the freeway side of Canada Road just south of the I-280 onramp.

Please visit Friends of Edgewood for information about other events at Edgewood County Park and Natural Preserve.

Please note that this event may be rescheduled or canceled, depending on the availability of caterpillars and the weather. Costs for this event are not refundable unless the event is canceled or the event is rescheduled and you notify us at least one day before the rescheduled date that you want a refund.
