Event Details

Mappathon: Dead or Alive November 1, 2013; 10 am – 6 pm & November 2, 2013, 10 am – 3 pm Ages 15 and older $100 ($75 NYSCI members)

Learn how to successfully map onto a 3D surface with special software that combines 3D animation with 3D projection. In this two-day workshop, Mappathon© staff will teach you how to use Modul8 and MadMapper from GarageCube and 1024 Architecture. Modul8 is software designed for real time video mixing and compositing; MadMapper has greatly simplified the process of working with this technique of video projection.

At the end of the workshop, your creations will be shown to NYSCI visitors as part of the Dead or Alive Party on November 2 from 3 – 6 pm. The workshop takes place over two days: Friday, November 1 from 10 am – 6 pm and Saturday, November 2 from 10 am – 3 pm. Recommended for ages 15 and older. Advance registration is required. Workshop costs $100 ($75 for members).

Each workshop participant will be given a 30-day, limited version of MadMapper and Modul8. After the 30-day period, participants are eligible to receive a student discount on purchase of the software.

Knowledge of Macintosh computers, graphic, video creation and/or VJ software is helpful, but not required. Participants should bring a VGA connector (dongle) and an Intel Macintosh laptop running Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6 or later. (MacBook Airs are not compatible.) Upon registration, participants will be sent instructions to install the software used in the workshop. Software must be installed prior to the first day of the workshop.

Mappathon: Projection Mapping 1.0 November 9, 2013; noon – 4 pm Ages 8 and older (Participants under 12 years old must be accompanied by an adult) $40 ($30 NYSCI members) for each slot at a computer

Learn the basics of animation using Modul8 and how to map a three-dimensional surface using Madmapper. This is a great introduction to understanding how projection mapping works. Computers will be provided.

Instructors for both workshops will be CHiKA and Bruno Kruse. CHiKA is an interactive visual artist and educator and a creator of Mappathon. She creates interactive projection mapping installations that explore the relationship between visual, light, sound and public audience. Her work has been shown at the American Museum of Natural History, the Museum of Art and Design, San Francisco Art Institute, Centre d’Art Contemporain Geneva, Museo Regional de Guadalajara, New York University, Cooper Union, The School of Visual Arts, Dumbo Arts Festival, and MOD Festival, among other places. Bruno Kruse is a New York based digital artist and developer. His work includes projections, computer vision and game theory. His recent artwork focuses on designing and developing tools to create interactive installations. He utilizes technology to create meaningful experiences and is motivated by an ongoing curiosity of designing with code.
