FreeAgent is a multi-award winning cloud accounting system specifically designed for micro-businesses and freelancers. The Company was founded in 2007 and is based in Edinburgh. In this seminar Dave will discuss how and why he moved from academia to industry, and how FreeAgent uses data to help guide business decisions and improve the experience of its customers.

Prior to joining FreeAgent, Dave worked on the search for the Higgs boson at the University of California, San Diego and CERN before becoming FreeAgent's first data scientist in 2013.


The Data Science Industry Seminar series, held by the EPSRC CDT in Data Science at the University of Edinburgh, invites speakers from public and private sectors to discuss how data science is being used in industry. The seminars are open to all and will be of particular interest to students, academic and technical staff, industry, and public sector organisations. Talks will be held on a monthly basis during term time.

The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Data Science, hosted by the University of Edinburgh, will train a new generation of data scientists, comprising 50 PhDs over five intake years, with the technical skills and interdisciplinary awareness necessary to become R&D leaders in this emerging area.
