Darrell Hammond guest speaker as MHA Celebrates 60 years of Service Excellence
Tuesday, November 4, 2014 from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM (CST)
Baton Rouge, LA
San Francisco, California
London, United Kingdom
With this 60th Celebration, MHA will kick off an annual speaker series for the community which will also offer continuing education for professionals. It is our hope that Darrell Hammond's personal story will lead to much needed community conversations on the state of mental health and addiction issues for Baton Rouge and the surrounding areas.
As the longest running cast member of SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, Darrell Hammond brought to life a cavalcade of politicians, media figures and celebrities, including Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Donald Trump, Dick Cheney, Chris Matthews, and the ever-popular Sean Connery.
Off the air, however, he was battling a severe drug and alcohol addiction and other issues stemming from a hellish and abusive childhood. The fact that he even survived long enough to achieve his goal is a testament to his tenacity and focus.
With poignant and hilarious turns, Hammond takes audiences from the set of SNL to visits to the White House (with stops along the way in various Harlem crack houses, a Caribbean jail, and more than a few psych wards). He is passionately committed to reducing the stigma of mental illness and addiction and to raising awareness of the need to get help from all resources available. The story of his journey to sobriety and the final (correct) diagnosis of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is inspiring audiences nationwide. His memoir was a NY Times bestseller and is currently being adapted as a one-man show for Broadway.
