6:30-7:30pm & 7:50-8:30pm: Live music for dancing

The Susie Hansen Latin Band plays great danceable Latin jazz, and for this Dance Hall, they're going to devote some quality time to the Cha Cha Cha, the beloved retro ballroom staple. Susie and her band will also play the great Salsa for which they are so well appreciated, and just for fun, the band will mix in a little Cumbia and Merengue, too! As Susie likes to say, “We aim for the feet!”

The evening is accompanied by dance classes with Salsa diva Laura Canellias, Susie’s favorite dance instructor. Laura choreographs for television, movies and stage, and has performed in many movies such as “The Mambo Kings” and “Dance With Me.” She is known as one of the foremost Salsa instructors on the West Coast, and teaches dance at Santa Monica College. On this evening, she will be instructing audience members on the Latin dance steps both before the band’s performance and during the band’s break. For all who want to join in the class, we guarantee you lots of fun! No partner is needed, and her emphasis will be on Cha Cha Chasalsadivaprod.com

Created in Cuba in 1952, Cha Cha Cha has its roots in a number of styles of Cuban music, especially Guajira and Danzon, and is influenced by Charanga and Son Montuno (these four predecessors of Cha Cha Cha originated during the late nineteenth century through the early 20th century). Closely related to Mambo and set to a rhythm of about 120 beats per minute, Cha Cha Cha has a more moderate tempo than Mambo. This allows the dancers to be comfortable with the fast dance step which, on the third or fourth beat, splits the beat, characterizing the dance.

The Susie Hansen Latin Band loves to play Cha Cha Cha, and performs a wide variety of this lively music. Some numbers are traditional songs from the Charanga repertoire, such as “Son al Son” by Orquesta Aragon. Others are covers of well-known songs written by famous Salsa artists, such as Tito Puente with his “Oye Com Va” -- and yes, it was made famous by Carlos Santana, but Tito wrote it. Some are original songs written by Susie and her band members (“Es Muy Tarde” and “Cha Cha Con Maña”), and others are American jazz standards in English arranged to a Cha Cha Cha beat (“Beyond the Sea” and “Frank Sinatra Cha Cha Cha”). Susie’s recordings of these jazz songs and original Cha Cha Cha numbers have been popular with club and radio DJs around the world. Finally, other songs that the band plays are covers of contemporary popular songs, such as the Cha Cha Cha “Let’s Never Stop Falling in Love” by Pink Martini.

A long-time favorite in Los Angeles, Susie and her band play more than 150 live performances every year, including such events as the Playboy Jazz Festival, Fiesta Broadway, San Jose Jazz Festival and the Toronto Jazz Festival. They have received great press, such as a review in the Los Angeles Times in which Don Heckman wrote, “Hansen was a ball of energy, creating an atmosphere of high voltage excitement.” Phil Elwood of the San Francisco Examiner described the band this way: “It’s a sizzling, swinging Salsa band. Hansen can solo as if her bow was afire. The whole room was jumpin’ for joy.” Susie has toured nationally with her band, and has personally appeared or recorded with Tito Puente, Orquesta Los Van Van, Celia Cruz, Vikki Carr, Orquesta Aragon, Paquito d’Rivera, Macy Grey, Orquesta Broadway, and Sonora Ponceña. She has released three CDs on the Jazz Caliente label to critical acclaim. susiehansen.com
