Beth Stelling Headlines the Cynic Cave
Beth Stelling’s latest late night stand-up set can be seen June 5th by tuning into The Pete Holmes Show on TBS after Conan. Beth has won the internet on Chris Hardwick’s show @midnight on Comedy Central. LA Weekly named her #2 on a list of “12 L.A. Comedy Acts to Watch in 2013.” Patton Oswalt also listed Beth as one of his favorite up-and-coming comics during his AMA on Reddit. Buzzfeed.com says she’s one of “14 Comedians Who You Should Be Paying Attention To.” She is in excellent company in Aritzia magazine’s comedy edition. She was a New Face of Comedy at the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal and returned in 2013 to record HBO Canada’s Funny As Hell with the incomparable Jon Dore. A few months after arriving in LA, Stelling made her standup television debut on TBS’s Conan.
Conan announced the release of her debut comedy album, Sweet Beth, on Rooftop Comedy’s record label. “Sweet Beth” was New & Noteworthy on iTunes upon release. Beth has also appeared on TV Guide Network’s Stand-up In Stilettos with Kate Flannery and as a round table guest on Chelsea Lately. Beth was deemed “Top 18 Women You Should Be Following On Twitter” by Huffington Post (you can do that by clicking up there to the right). Nerdist.com has been a big supporter of Beth, including her in their “Four Funny Female Comedians You Need to Know” alongside Shelby Fero, Tig Notaro and Ali Wong. Beth can be heard on Chris Hardwick’s annual podcast Stand-up Cluster 2013 and with Pete Holmes on his podcast “You Made It Weird” #134.
Stelling started telling jokes seriously in Chicago where she was a cast member of Chicago Underground Comedy. She performed stand-up, studied improv at The Annoyance Theater and tri-hosted a show called “Entertaining Julia” that remains beloved today with her pals Tiffany and Danielle Puterbaugh. In 2010 The Chicago Reader named Beth the “Best Stand-up Comedian in Chicago.”
Beth continues to work bars, theaters, bookstores, sex shops, clubs, festivals and colleges across the country. She’s had the honor and delight of working alongside some of her favorite comics: Anthony Jeselnik, Cristela Alonzo, Pete Holmes, Chris Hardwick, Rob Delaney, Sarah Silverman, Kristen Schaal, Andy Richter, Jimmy Pardo, Matt Braunger, Kyle Kinane, Dana Gould, Kate Berlant and Reggie Watts among others. Beth has a bi-weekly L.A. show called CHURCH with Julian McCullough, Sean O’Connor & Brent Sullivan at The Church on York in Highland Park(4904 York Blvd). 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month at 8:30p starting Jan. 6, 2014. $5 on ticketfly, $8 at the door.
Beth acts and improvises in webseries, short films, sketches, is a Moth StorySlam champion and voices cartoons. Stelling has a theater degree from Miami University, interned with The School at Steppenwolf and studied with Lesly Kahn in Los Angeles. Stelling’s creation and portrayal of Vern Schultz in “Five Lesbians Eating a Quiche” earned her a nomination for a 2011 Chicago Beat Award for Best Actress in a Non-Equity play. “Five Lesbians Eating a Quiche” was produced Off Broadway by the SoHo Playhouse and was published by Samuel French in 2013. Beth has the pleasure of writing for MTV’s Ridiculousness
