This month's cultural ambassador is Gayga Haralam, who grew up in the northern part of the Philippine island of Luzon as an igorot (Kankanaey clan). She began cooking at the age of eight, not yet realizing just how much she loved to cook and plan meals.
Today, Gayga is a professional cook and baker, and is looking forward to introducing you to her native cuisine.
On the Menu:
Pork adobo (with rice and pork): Considered to be the Philippines national dish by many, this easy-to-make yet delicious dish can also be made with chicken.
Mung Beans with Chayote: First cultivated in Mexico, chayote is from the gourd family. This Philippine version pulls in the Asian mung bean with local herbs and spices to produce a delicious side dish.
Biko: For dessert don’t miss biko, a sweet and sticky rice dish
Balut: The more adventurous might want to try balut, a Filipino delicacy. Only a few will be available for the program, so let us know if you are interested in trying this out and we’ll try to accommodate your request.
A $5 ingredient fee will be collected at registration or at the time of the event. You do not need to print out a ticket, but please check in at the registration table before seating. Space permitting you can also register at the door.
