Event Details

Welcome to Reservations and Information, including the complete Course Listing for the 2013 Barracks Row Culinary Education Crawl.

On Sunday, February 17. 2013  8th Street, SE, becomes a cooking school campus - first class begins at 9:00 a.m. and the last class begins at 7:00 p.m. - there are tweny-five classes over the course of the day. Take one class or schedule a whole day of classes- its totally a-la-carte.

Most classes will be held at the restaurants, however some will be held at Hill Center, 921 Pennsylvania Ave SE. From Eastern Market Metro plaza walk one block east, crossing 8th Street, SE and continue past Dunkin Donuts and the BP gas station to 9th Street, SE. Hill Center is at the corner of 9th and Pennsylvania Avenue, SE.

You must purchase tickets on-line at this site by 6:00 p.m. Feb. 16, 2013; you will be sent purchase confirmation by email.

Once a class is full it will be closed to further registrants.

You must be 12 years of age to participate, or 21 years of age if class includes alcohol.

Beer for Wine Lovers/ Wine for Beer Lovers! 50 minute class (18 seats) $25.00

It's a common couples' conundrum - one person loves wine while the other prefers beer. But those things that divde us can also bring us closer together. We'll explore the similarities between the world's two great fermented beverages and show that there's room for both at the table. Tastings of three craft beers and three boutique wines included! Class held in Hill Center Art room. DCanter will open soon at 545 8th St. SE.

 Handmade Pasta Rolling taught by Hill Center's Chef, Wendi James. Learn to create fettuccine and ravioli from scratch. Enjoy your creations with sauce made by this Le Cordon Bleu trained chef. Class is held in Hill Center's state-of-the Art teaching kitchen.

Oyster Shucking - 45 minute class (12 seats) $20.00

Chef explains oyster anatomy and how to shuck; then you eat all you can shuck! Beer or soft drinks served during class

Cupcake Decorating for All Occasions: 90 min class (15 seats) $20.00

Ever wonder how they make those gorgeous swirls, flowers or monograms? Its easier than you think and you can learn how at Hello Cupcake! Join talented pastry chefs to learn basic decorating techniques, try your hand at it and take home 1/2 dozen of your own beautifully decorated cupcakes.

Making Tzatziki - The Secret Sauce of Greece - 30 minute class (20 seats) $20.00

 What ketchup is to Americans Tzatziki is to Greeks. This is the univeral dipping sauce in every Greek kitchen - works for any meal, on anything! In this short class the Cava chef will  take you through how to make Tzatziki at home. Just to insipire you, each student gets a container of Cava's own brand of tzatziki for the road!

Becoming a Belgian Gourmand: Cooking and Drinking with Chef Thijs (28 Seats) $30.00

 Learn how to cook (and eat) 3 traditional Belgian dishes: Kazen Kroketten ( cheese croquettes), Mossels Witbier (Belgian mussel pot) and Vanilla Waffel (waffel with Vanilla Bean Ice Cream and Belgian Chocolate sauce). You'll also enjoy 3 Belgian beers to pair with each course. Class is taught by Chef Thijs Clinckemaillie, a Belgian chef with over 7 years experience in France and Belgium including stints at several Michelin Three-Star restaruants. Class time difficult to guage, but, to be safe, we recommend allowing 90 minutes.

Charcuterie Basics with Chef Darren Maas- 60 minute class (28 seats) $30.00

Learn to cure meats at home to create full flavored appetizers and main courses. Chef Darren demonstrates how to use herbs, spices, honey, paprika and a host of other unusual ingredients to make charcuterie from pork and beef. These intensely flavored meats are perfect compliments to cheese and before-dinner drinks creating an impressive hors d'oeuvres course. Demonstration, hands-on experience, generous samples served with cheese and beer.

Chef Dot's Spaghetti Carbonara - 75 minute class (24 seats) $25.00

Not Mom's Tuesday night spaghetti, this dish is scratch-made with intriguing layers of flavors. Class is invited to participate in the creation of gourmet Spaghetti Carbonara: house cured pork belly, peas, carbonara sauce and pecorino cheese.  Dine on the results of your labors and take home samples of the rub used to cure the pork belly.

 Chef Ivan's Sarma/Traditional Serbian Cabbage Rolls- 60 minute class (16 seats) $25.00

 Always inspired by his mom's superb cooking, it was the total perfection of her Sarma that inspired Ivan to become a chef. Today he is one of the top three chefs in Serbia. You'll learn the secrets of Sarma - step by step - as well as the history of this classic Serbian dish. After the Sarma is complete, you dine on the results. Beer with class.

Latin Cooking Traditions with Jorge Zamarano- 75 minute class (12 seats) $30.00

The political situation caused Jorge Zamarano's family to leave Cuba for Pueto Rico. Eventually Jorge made his way to the United States.  Over the years, as owner of Banana Cafe, 500 8th Street, SE,  Jorge has taught his chefs family recipes he learned in different regions of Latin America which his family called home. You'll learn to make aroz con garundulez; lechon azado (roasted pork), plantains, and Jorge's mom's coconut flan. Includes mini-session in Mojitos Making with generous samples of this Cuban classic. Held in Hill Center state-of-the-art teaching kitchen.

Begin with pasta rolling; then the sauces... start with the basics in two flavors: red and white- with discussion and suggestions about adding meats or fish when you expand this lesson at home.  Complete this primer with wine pairings - again, red and white.  End the class by dining on your creations!

 Creating Sushi - Hill Center's Chef Kathleen - 60 minute class (22 seats) - $30.00

The Hill Center's Chef Kathleen Linton demonstrates how to create sushi delicacies, explaining the steps as she goes. Then, after each demonstration, it's your turn... make your own - coached along by Chef Kathleen. Class will make three rolls including the "inside out" roll. Eat what you make . Class held in Hill Center Art Room.
