Cruise Control Revisited: Understanding Sex Addiction in Gay Men

Two Presenters; Robert Weiss, LCSW, CSAT-S and Jeff Zacharias, LCSW, CAADC, RDDP, will be presenting two workshops.

WORKSHOP 1: “Addiction and the LGBTQI Community – Understanding the Intersection Between the Two” with Jeff Zacharias, LCSW, CAADC, RDDP.

This presentation will delve into the topic of addiction in the LGBTQI population. Research has shown that rates of addiction are higher in the LGBTQI population as compared to the hetero-normative population. Fueling the addiction can be a myriad of issues including: homophobia, gender identity/expression, anxiety, depression as well as the coming out process. Further complications arise if there are biological, medical, familial, religious and/or psychological issues. This talk will provide an overview of addiction in the LGBTQI population, exam the factors that exacerbate an existing addiction and provide evidence based practices for treating the LGBTQI population.

WORKSHOP 2: “Cruise Control Revisited: Understanding Sex Addiction in Gay Men” with Robert Weiss, LCSW CSAT-S:

This presentation offered by author and national clinical sexual disorders expert Rob Weiss, provides clear, non-judgmental insight into the serious problem of sexual addiction among gay men. Common myths related to sex addiction and homophobia will be dispelled and the diagnosis fully explained. This talk will offer a window into evolving digital technologies (social media, apps) as well as gay intimacy/gay marriage, as they relate to addictive disorders today. The interactive disorder of stimulant (coke/meth) abuse and sexual behavior will be reviewed. This talk –useful to both clinicians and recovering people alike- provides an overview of the basics of the sexual addiction/sexual compulsivity diagnosis along with useful direction and resources toward sexual sobriety, psychological healing and healthy intimacy.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of the presentation, participants will be able to:

1. List 3 primary symptoms of sexual addiction

2. List 3 specific issues that have escalated the interaction of digital technology and sex

3. List 3 types of support group referrals useful to an identified sexual addict

4. Discuss the impact of specific drug classes as it relates to factors such as age and sex in the LGBTQI population.
