Our first-ever George Harrison birthday salute, “Creme Tangerine,” brings an amazing amount of great songs performed by all-star bands in a night of uplifting music. It is also, of course, the latest Ashkenaz Community Benefit Night, where dozens of musicians donate their talents to raising money for our all-ages, nonprofit community center on the eve of our 40th birthday. Previous Community Benefit Nights have offered birthday salutes to such greats as Bob Dylan, John Lennon, and Bob Marley. Performers run the gamut from rock and soul to bluegrass, pop, folk, and country.

With his great Beatles and solo songs, George Harrison contributed more compositions than can fit in this night’s program, which will likely run way past midnight. In addition to being the lead guitarist in the Beatles (Rolling Stone magazine ranks him 11th in its “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time”), Harrison has been a huge influence on music and culture: his friendship with Ravi Shankar introduced Indian classical music and the sitar to much of the world; he created the first all-star rock benefit, the Concert for Bangladesh; started HandMade Films to release such movies as Monty Python’s “Life of Brian” and Terry Gilliam’s “Time Bandits”; and was a founding member of the Traveling Wilburys (along with Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne).

Oh, yes, Harrison also was a great pop song composer, and tonight we will focus on those songs, some delivered in beautiful harmonized versions, some leading into extended jams. Expect to hear “Something,” “All Things Must Pass,” “Here Comes the Sun,” “Beware of Darkness,” “Taxman,” “I Me Mine,” “If I Needed Someone,” “Savoy Truffle,” “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” “My Sweet Lord,” “Isn’t It a Pity,” “Living in the Material World,” and many more.

Singer-songwriter David Gans, host of the KPFA program “Dead to the World” and the syndicated “Grateful Dead Hour,” organized tonight’s benefit. He explains, “George Harrison was often overshadowed by Lennon and McCartney in the Beatle legend, but over time the depth of his talent has become more widely appreciated. The HBO film ‘Living in the Material World’ helped spark a renewed interest in George’s music, and also illuminated his spiritual gifts to our culture. The Ashkenaz is a house of both music and spiritual welcome, so we thought it fitting to celebrate his life and music here.”
