Thomas Dutton - is an architect and Cincinnati Professor of Community Engagement at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. His research has published in such journals as the Journal of Architectural Education (JAE), Designer/Builder, The Nation, The Black Scholar, Shelterforce, and Z Magazine.
Dutton is founder and director of Miami University’s Center for Community Engagement in Over-the-Rhine (2002), which offers opportunities for faculty, student, and community learning in that inner-city, Cincinnati neighborhood. He has been active in the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood for thirty-two years. He and his students, through the Over-the-Rhine Design/Build Studio, have designed and rehabilitated housing for people on low and moderate incomes there since 1996.
In 2006, Dutton, with community and university support, started the Over-the-Rhine Residency Program, which brings students to Over-the-Rhine for a full semester to work with community organizations.
The Contemporary Arts Center – one of the nation's oldest and most celebrated contemporary art institutions–is a non-collecting museum devoted to presenting contemporary art from around the world. The CAC's mission is based on the idea that there is an inextricable link between art and life, and that connections are made through contemporary art. We provide a space for reflection and dialogue, where the public can engage with artists, scholars, and each other around contemporary issues. The CAC is an open cultural forum where people gather to gain exposure to new ideas and where art is a means for people to connect to each other and to the world.
Findlay Market is Ohio's oldest continuously operated public market and one of Cincinnati's most cherished institutions. The Market is located just blocks from downtown in Over-the-Rhine, a dense historic neighborhood rich in 19th century architecture. Open Tuesday through Sunday, Findlay Market is home year-around to about two dozen indoor merchants selling meat, fish, poultry, produce, flowers, cheese, deli, and ethnic foods. On Saturdays and Sundays from April to November the Market also hosts a thriving farmers market, dozens of outdoor vendors, numerous street performers, and lots of special events.
