A Day Long Conference highlighting New Media Approaches

2pm – 9pm  Theresa Lang Student Center – 2nd floor, 55 West 13th Street

The Creatively Speaking Film series is an ongoing program curated by New School professor Michelle Materre. This month will feature a day-long conference of screenings, panels and networking open to the New School community, industry professionals, and independent film enthusiasts.

The day will consist of three distinctive programs:
Part 1 – 2:00 opening/introductions

 2:15pm - “Forward Home: The Power of the Caribbean Diaspora” – Executive Produced by Dr. Keith Nurse, University of the West Indies, Kingston, Jamaica – 50mins.

Shot in nine countries across the globe, this film reveals the economic power of the people of the Caribbean Diaspora living in global cities and focuses on the significance of their contribution to their respective homelands as travelers and entrepreneurs.

3:15pm -Panel will feature filmmaker and global economist, Dr. Keith Nurse; and other invited guests.

4:00pm – Coffee break/Networking

Part 2 --4:30pm – “Living Thinkers: An autobiography of Black Women in the Ivory Tower” – by Roxanna Walker-Canton – 75 mins. Roxana Walker-Canton is an award-winning independent documentary-maker, video installation artist and professor of media studies and screenwriting.Living Thinkers examines the intersection of race, class and gender in the experiences of contemporary Black women professors and administrators through their education narratives from girlhood to the present. Black women see the university as a space to find personal identity, give voice to global and community issues, and make significant contributions to American intellectual history, revealing the trials, disappointments and triumphs of becoming Black women professors in the US. 

5:45pm – Panel will feature filmmaker Roxana Walker Canton, and  other invited guests, moderated by Dr. Tracyann Williams, Director of Academic Advising, The New School.

6:30pm – Reception

Part 3 -- 7:00pm - #Black, Brown and Digital – a presentation of up and coming web series and their producers curated by New School SUS Alumni Darren Mallett and New School Media Studies student Empress Varnado.

7:30pm - #bbdigital presentation

9:00pm – end of program

This conference is co-sponsored by School of Media Studies and School of Undergraduate Studies. The New School for Public Engagement, pending (Milano, GPIA, and Student Senate).

Michelle Materre is the lead curator and co-founder of the series and is assisted every year by students and alumni of The New School, lovingly called "The Creatively Speaking 'A' Team"!
