CQ-Roll Call Policy Breakfast

Keeping America Moving: Alternative Fuels, Environmental Issues and the Future of Transportation

moderated by: David Hawkings, Managing Editor, CQ Weekly

This CQ-Roll Call Policy Breakfast will examine alternative fuel options including clean coal, natural gas and biofuels after the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico. Discussion topics may include: Is deep-water drilling the only way to ensure future oil supplies in the U.S., and if deep water drilling is halted will other energy sources be able to satisfy America’s energy needs? Will an increased focus on alternative fuels lead to less congestion and pollution on America’s highways? Are vehicles fueled by alternative energy the solution? Smart grid technology may have the capacity to improve energy efficiency in many areas including transportation, but is the cost prohibitive? If consumers move away from gasoline to power their vehicles, how will the transportation infrastructure be paid for? What is the best strategy to utilize all of our available domestic energy resources such as coal and natural gas in a reliable, affordable and safe manner to ensure that the energy needs of the U.S. are met?
