Event Details

This event is sponsored by Cultivating Our Sisterhood International Association, Inc. (COSIA) and will provides you with the opportunity to connect with women who share an interest and passion for writing. COSIA members will share advice and provide information on the writing and publication process. These published authors will take questions and provide guidance and feedback on attendees' ideas and projects.

Panelists Scheduled to Appear:

Kumari V. Ghafoor-Davis, MSW, has served children and families as a Program Manager, Social Worker and Administrator since 1994.  Kumari is a NJ certified School Social Worker and is an Adjunct in the Sociology Departments at Passaic County College and Montclair State University in NJ, and Hunter College in NYC. As a mother of four, Kumari understands the challenges of raising children and this served as her inspiration to write “Real Talk: Ten Parenting Strategies to Raising Confident Successful Children."

Sonia “LeRoia” Russell, the Editor-in-Chief for COSIAnet and the Publications Chair for Cultivating Our Sisterhood International Association (COSIA), is an author, writer, poet, orator, publisher, and actor. SoniSpeaksVolumes Publishing, LLC published Sonias first novel, “The Cost of Love” under the pseudonym of LeRoia. Sonia is currently working on the follow-up entitled “Flutter,” as well as her first childrens book.  She has been published by The National Library of Poetry, with one of her poems titled "I Thought I Knew” appearing in a compilation of poems entitled "The Other Side of Midnight." 

Eartha Watts-Hicks, former board member of COSIA, is the founder of Earthatone Enterprises and Earthatone Books, an imprint of Earthatone Enterprises, LLC. She produces press material and market copy for small business owners, churches, non-profit organizations, film projects, and independent artists (poets, authors and musicians).  She is a member of Women in PR, the Black Public Relations Society, the New York Association of Black Journalist, as well as a contributing writer for Harlem World's Magazine's blog site and several other online publications. Eartha Watts-Hicks is the award-winning author of Love Changes and has been featured in the New York Amsterdam News. In June of 2013, Eartha Watts-Hicks received the Just R.E.A.D. 'literary game changers' Award by the NYCHA  branch of the NAACP and named a 2013 NAACP ambassador for literacy.

This event is open to all women age 18 and older.

By Subway

Take the B, D, or 4 train to Bedford Park Blvd Station. From the station exit:

  • Take the Bx 26 bus east to the Garden's Mosholu Gate entrance.
  • OR walk eight blocks down the hill on Bedford Park Blvd to the end (approximately 20 minutes). Turn left onto Southern Blvd and walk one block to Mosholu Gate entrance.


By Metro-North Railroad

Take the Metro-North to Botanical Garden Station. Walk across Southern Boulevard to the Garden's Mosholu Gate entrance. Just 20 minutes from Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan! Also convenient from other locations.

Spaces are limited, so all guests must register and print out their registration tickets to access this free event.

At COSIA, we believe that: we can develop supportive networks for women that are not limited by age, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, and/or any other category of separation; we can utilize our networks as resources to produce affordable events and programs that promote team-building and the development, critical review, and active pursuit of personal and professional life goals and objectives; and we can support through fundraising and volunteer activities socially conscious initiatives and programs that benefit women and youth from underserved communities.
