When & Where
Billings Forge Community Works
Based in the Frog Hollow neighborhood of Hartford, CT, Billings Forge Community Works (BFCW) envisions a strong, stable and vibrant Frog Hollow where all residents have access to healthy and affordable food; where all youth have access to quality education and enrichment programming; and where there are job opportunities for all neighborhood residents.
The Mission of our organization. Billings Forge Community Works is a driving force for community participation and empowerment in Frog Hollow through promoting access to healthy food; engaging youth; and developing employment opportunities and economically sustainable social enterprises.
Since our founding in 2007, BFCW has brought fresh energy and new expertise to Frog Hollow. We have built extraordinary goodwill throughout the region and attracted many supporters. We have pursued a range of programmatic activity to enhance the quality of life in Frog Hollow and serve critical needs in the community. We have built on a deep core of culinary expertise to create a vibrant set of programs around culinary careers and engagement with food, cooking, and food-based enterprises.
Billings Forge Community Works promotes community participation and empowerment through:
- Culinary training and enterprises, which provide a real-world setting for effective job training for those with barriers to employment (incarceration, homelessness, poverty).
- Community programs and deliberate community outreach that build the social capital of the neighborhood and encourage resident-led community engagement. This includes our Farmers Market, which doubles food stamps; our garden, where residents can grow their own food; and rental of The Studio for community gatherings.
- Youth and family programs that build developmental assets of children, youth, and young adults, focusing on cooking, social entrepreneurship, and community building.
