September 23rd and 24th will include talks by industry leaders, ask an expert sessions, an in-depth review of new features, roundtables, prizes, games, contests and live music.

Thursday, September 25th, 2014 | CONVERGE™: Advanced Topics (Session 1)

Fluid-Structure Interaction Modeling in CONVERGE | 8a.m. - 12p.m.

Rigid body Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) describes how the the presence of one or more immersed objects affects the flow field and how the forces from the surrounding fluid influence the dynamics of the object. This is useful for problems where an object's motion is not entirely prescribed and requires a dynamics solver to obtain the object's translational and rotational position, velocity, and/or acceleration in time. This workshop will discuss the theory behind FSI, the numerics of the dynamics solver, and the coupling of the dynamics solver to the flow solver in CONVERGE. It will also cover several examples highlighting the current capabilities available to users both through the input files and with a user-defined function (UDF). We will work through examples using the 1 degree of freedom (DOF) solver for motion constrained to either one translational or one rotational direction and then focus on full 6 DOF simulations with multiple objects subjected to FSI. Finally, more complex examples that require a UDF for complicated forces and motion restrictions will be discussed.

 

Advanced Combustion Modeling in CONVERGE | 8a.m. - 12p.m.

There are a variety of combustion sub-models available for three dimensional combustion modeling in internal combustion (IC) engines. In this workshop, five advanced combustion models will be covered: The delta PDF combustion model (SAGE), the G equation combustion model, the Representative Interactive Flamelet (RIF) combustion model, the 3-Zone extended coherent flame model (ECFM3Z) and the flamelet generated manifold (FGM) (coming in Converge 2.3). Among these models, the G equation model is suitable for premixed spark ignition processes in gasoline engines, and the RIF and ECFM3Z models are used for diffusion controlled diesel engine simulations. SAGE and FGM are generalized combustion models which can be applied to either diffusion controlled diesel engine simulations or premixed gasoline engine simulations. This workshop will mainly focus on the equations and theory of these combustion models, the advantages and disadvantages of each combustion model, and how the combustion models couple with the CFD solver in CONVERGE. Chemical mechanism reduction and knock prediction will be covered briefly as well.


CONVERGE and Rescale | Lunch | 12p.m. – 1p.m

Rescale is a cloud simulation platform that partners closely with Convergent Science to support CONVERGE in the cloud on Rescale’s dynamically scalable on-demand environment. Learn more about how you can instantly scale both software and hardware resources to fully optimize your CAE analyses using Rescale’s customizable hardware and intuitive interface and CONVERGE’s run-time mesh generation CFD solver. This session will take you through how to set up and run a CONVERGE job on Rescale’s platform, how to customize resources for simulations, use case examples, advanced features, and answer common questions associated with running simulations in the cloud.


Conjugate Heat Transfer modeling in CONVERGE | 1p.m. - 5p.m.

For years CONVERGE has been able to interface with other packages for modeling heat transfer in solids. Now CONVERGE is able to do both CFD and solid heat transfer modeling in the same simulation. This can greatly simplify the process of predicting temperature in solids that are dependent on fluid interfaces, e.g. heads and valves in engines. CONVERGE also has a built-in supercycle feature that takes care of the disparate timescales in the solid and fluid domains by allowing the solid side of the simulation to progress with faster timescales than the fluid. This workshop will introduce two new concepts to CONVERGE: interface boundaries and supercycling.

 

Genetical Algorithm Optimization in CONVERGE | 1p.m. - 5p.m.

This advanced workshop will focus on model optimization using the CONGO utility, which can be used for Genetic Algorithm (GA) optimization or for Design of Experiments model interrogation (DoE). Different types of optimization and the details of the genetic algorithm methodology will be shown. The setup for the utility, options for parameter selection, and how to run an optimization will be demonstrated using examples. The best practices of optimization (such as model setup, parameter and range selection, search space considerations) and advanced applications like geometry modification will be discussed.

 

 

Friday, September 26th, 2014 | CONVERGE™: Advanced Topics (Session 2) + EnSight Full-Day Workshop

Heat Transfer Mapping in CONVERGE | 8a.m. - 10a.m.

This advanced workshop will focus on mapping CONVERGE CFD results to different surface files for heat transfer analysis. The process for mapping will be discussed using the CONVERGE HTC_MAP utility, including the methodology of cycle averaging and details of the mapping method. The alignment of geometry for surfaces will be explained and demonstrated. How to use the utility and best practices for mapping will be discussed using examples. Additionally, there will be a brief discussion of best practices for heat transfer prediction in CFD simulations with CONVERGE.

 

Emissions Modeling in CONVERGE | 8.a.m. - 11a.m.

High-fidelity soot models can reveal detailed information in engine simulations, but the complexity of the models renders them computationally impractical for three dimensional simulations with detailed chemistry. This workshop will be open to users who have basic soot modeling background and would like to have a better understanding of the detailed soot models in CONVERGE. In the present talk, two new detailed soot models, i.e., the particulate mimic (PM) model and the particulate size mimic model (PSM) will be discussed in detail. The following topics will be covered in this workshop. First, the methodologies employed by the detailed soot models, i.e., the method of moments and the sectional method, for the PM and PSM models respectively, will be introduced. Secondly, the acceleration strategies for the detailed soot model coupling with the gas phase chemistry, which renders it possible to apply the detailed soot models for practical engine simulations, will be discussed. The effects of different gas phase mechanisms and important soot parameters which are affecting the modeling results will also be covered to help users gain insight into how the detailed soot models work. A tutorial on case setup and available soot outputs for the detailed soot models will be given. Finally, details of the other emissions models (e.g., NOx) available in CONVERGE will be described.


CONVERGE - GT Power Coupling | 11a.m. - 12p.m.

There are two ways to couple CONVERGE with GT-SUITE: GTLINK and CONVERGE-Lite. In the coupling with GT-LINK, CONVERGE is the master process, which controls the coupling. GT-SUITE provides the dynamic libraries for the API functions. In the coupling with CONVERGE-Lite, GT-SUITE is the master process, which controls the coupling. CONVERGE provides the dynamic library for the API functions. CONVERGE, CONVERGE_STUDIO and POST_CONVERT are the modules of GT-SUITE. This workshop will demonstrate the model settings using both coupling options. Cylinder coupling will also be addressed.


Advanced Spray Modeling in CONVERGE | 1p.m. - 4p.m.

CONVERGE includes state-of-the-art sub-models for simulating liquid spray phenomena in the Lagrangian framework. The current models for liquid breakup, collision and coalesence, vaporization, drag, turbulent dispersion, and drop/wall interaction will be described in this workshop. Particular attention will be given to numerical mesh and parcel number settings for achieving grid convergence for RANS and LES simulations. Finally, details of current research and future spray modeling directions will be provided.

 

Volume of Fluid Modeling in CONVERGE | 1p.m. - 3p.m.

The Volume of Fluid (VOF) method is one of the most popular numerical techniques for locating moving and deforming interfaces between fluids in multiphase flow simulations. In this workshop, numerical details and some validation calculations of two VOF methods in CONVERGE will be covered. The first VOF method is based on the species mass fraction and the second one is the Piecewise-Linear Interface Calculation (PLIC) scheme. In the mass fraction based VOF, the volume fraction is computed using the mass fraction of each speices. The species mass fractions are governed by the species transport equations. As species can diffuse into each other, this scheme can be used for miscible multiphase flow simulations. This scheme is suitable for compressible multiphase flow calculations. PLIC based VOF is used for tracking the interface between immiscible and incompressible fluids with minimal interface diffusion. This approach approximates the interface locally as a planar surface. Based on the local orientation and the void fraction values, a geometric construction of the interface is performed as a first step. The constructed interface is used for advecting the correct amount of fluids in the neighbouring cells. This method has been tested on a range of problems such as a breaking dam, a rising droplet, and spray injection. Each of these test cases illustrate the ability of the method to track interfaces sharply.
