In 2013, the General Assembly of Arkansas passed SB33, the Arkansas Dyslexia Law, which requires public schools to screen and provide multisensory, structured intervention to students with markers of dyslexia. The specific intervention, as outlined in the law,  must be provided by someone certified in a dyslexia program approved by the Department of Education. Currently, Connections: OG in 3D is the only dyslexia intervention, meeting the requirements of the law, that is approved by the Arkansas Department of Education for professional development. ADE PD Code # 8168061300000

35 Hour Orton-Based

Phonology Course

 

A thirty-five hour course in systematic, multi-sensory techniques for teaching the acquisition of the basic skills for reading, sponsored by The APPLE Group, Inc. of Jonesboro, Arkansas.

 

 The participants will learn a multi-sensory approach to intervention strategies for children who exhibit different learning styles.   The goal of the course is for the participants to have a full understanding of multisensory intervention skills. They will have an understanding of current scientific research and brain studies involving dyslexia and effective, evidence-based reading programs.

 

 CONNECTIONS: OG in 3D is a, systematic, multi-sensory research-based approach to teaching the phonology, decoding, and reading skills of the English language.  The trainee will be well-versed in preparing, implementing, and conducting the components of an Orton-Gillingham based lesson which includes phonemic awareness (enabling the student to detect, segment, blend, and manipulate sounds in the spoken language); graphophonemic knowledge for teaching the letter-sound plan of English; and the structure of the English language that includes morphology, semantics, syntax, and pragmatics.

 

Participants will learn linguistic instruction directed toward proficiency and fluency with the patterns of language so that words and sentences are carriers of meaning. Connections: OG in 3D teaches strategies for decoding, encoding, word recognition, fluency, and comprehension.

 

 This workshop is for    teachers    special educators    counselors    principals    intervention specialists    reading specialists    parents or grandparents of dyslexics    tutors

 

One in five children has trouble learning to read in spite of having normal intelligence, adequate instruction, no emotional disturbances, and no sensory deficits.  These children need a different approach to learning language, the sounds and the letters that represent them, and how to put them together and take them apart.  Their hands, eyes, ears, and voices have to work together to retain what is being taught. This requires a structured, sequential, multisensory method of teaching.  Not only is this type of instruction essential for the 1 in 5 children who do not respond well to typical teaching methods, but it also works for all children and can be used in any classroom with amazing results.

Class size is limited to 22.  Registration will be taken on a first come, first served basis.  Your spot will be held when $300 non refundable deposit is received or class is paid in full. A waiting list will be formed after the first 22 are received. Cancellation possible and fees refunded if class is not filled.

The APPLE Group, Inc.  Alternative Programs Providing Learning Experiences
 
The mission of The APPLE Group, Inc. is to support parents and teachers whose children learn differently and to educate parents, teachers, and the community about strategies for success. In pursuing this mission, The APPLE Group has identified the following goals:

The APPLE Group, Inc. was started in 1997 by several parents and teachers whose children were very bright and dyslexic. This group knew that many famous achievers such as John Grisham, Agatha Christie, Winston Churchill, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, Ansel Adams, Leonardo Divinci, and Walt Disney were dyslexic. It was important to this group to reach these kids who otherwise might fall through the cracks.  
 
It began by following the newest research about dyslexia and how dyslexics must be taught. The founders, Mary-Margaret Scholtens and Cherry Frierson, spent several years traveling the country becoming trained in several well-known Orton-Gilligham methods. Training teachers and parents in these strategies, as well as reporting on the current research became the group's main mission. 
 
The APPLE Group, Inc. became a 501c3 nonprofit in the year 2000. Since then, it has trained hundreds of teachers, tutors, and parents in the Orton-Gilligham method, specifically: CONNECTIONS: Og in 3D written by Frierson and Scholtens.  
 
In 1991, Act 338 was enacted by the General Assembly of Arkansas requiring public schools in Arkansas to identify all children with Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) and to provide training for teachers encountering children with these problems in the regular classroom. Due to more current evidence based research and changes in the laws, rules, and regulations, in 2007, the Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) developed an updated guide to address SLD, specifically dyslexia.  It is called the Resource Guide for Addressing Specific Learning Disabilities. This information is based on the same research and teaching strategies as found in the trainings and workshops provided by The APPLE Group.

JONESBORO PREP was started to provide intense learning experiences in a distraction free environment taught by some of the best teachers available. Several small group classes are offered as enrichment to regular education and as test prep for the ACT.

Week One-

 

A. Sunday night- 1 ½ hours

1. Student takes practice test in typical testing conditions.

 

B.  Monday night- 1 ½ hours

1. Practice test is graded.

2. Missed questions are analyzed.

3. Specific lesson plans are designed to cover questions the student missed.

 

Week Two- Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday (1 ½ hours each night)

 

1.Tutors go over specific subject areas, concentrating on teaching skills the students

missed on the practice test.

2.English, Writing, Science, Math

3.There will be different hand-picked tutors for each subject area

 

Week Three- Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday (1 ½ hours each night)

The intensives are designed to cover specific content areas in a short amount of time. The student will be able to focus on that material for a concentrated time, mastering benchmarks they should know before completing high school.  Some classes build upon each other. Some classes stand alone.

 

The supplemental intensives are taught by hand-picked instructors chosen for their ability to convey understanding, to challenge and to motivate students to learn in a distraction free environment.

 

Students should make sure they will be able to attend all classes before signing up for the class.  The fee for classes will be prepaid.  No refunds will be given for absences.

Distraction free learning means that there is no time to deal with discipline problems. One warning and then the students will be asked to leave that session.There will be a basket to drop cell phones into as the students walk in the door.  A student may bring a drink, but meals may not be eaten during class.




AP Prep

 

1 ½ hour session-$30 each session

-prepaid for the month due the first session of the month.

 

-Weekly study sessions for students enrolled in AP classes.

 

-For students who want to be challenged by taking AP classes in school but also protect their GPAs by staying organized and studying efficiently.

 

-These sessions will help students put assignments into manageable tasks, keeping them in an organized calendar, and provide reminders for assignments due.

 

-Students will study for tests and complete projects together as necessary.

 

-A tutor will guide them through the week’s lessons, reteaching if needed as well as introducing new material.

 

-When possible, the actual teacher of the AP class will be hired.
