Event Details

Addiction is a disease and not a character flaw.  Persons in recovery often feel that the Church has abandoned them, and that it doesn’t understand the insidious nature of addiction.  We hope by providing training, resources and ongoing support that we can equip our faith communities not only to prevent addiction but to understand persons in recovery and better minister to them and their loved ones.

Conference participants will return to their faith communities better equipped to deal with addiction issues that arise.  They will also be aware of prevention and recovery programs that can be implemented within the walls of their church.

We expect this conference to be the beginning of an ongoing conversation on the faith community’s role in addiction and prevention.  We hope participating congregations will form an addiction ministry team for their congregation, and implement one of the programs introduced at the conference of create one that works for their faith community’s needs.

Two-by-Two

Just as Jesus sent out his disciples two-by-two, we hope each congregation will be represented by two people, a lay leader and a member of the clergy for example.

 Short Term Goals

  1. Provide education of clergy and key lay leaders on the issues of recovery and the extent addiction issues affect our communities.
  2. Identify current resources available to help deal with these issues including best practices throughout the recovery and prevention communities.
  3. Adopt and/or create ministries in faith communities that complement existing resources.

 Long Term Goals

  1. Create congregational ministries that provide alternatives to addictive behaviors.
  2. Remove the stigma of addiction by developing an understanding of recovery, the recovery process, and the needs of the addict and their loved ones throughout our faith communities.
  3. Develop missionally excellent programming led by active and involved lay leaders and clergy for persons who are effected and affected by addiction.
