Conducting a Relapse Analysis

Kevin Wadalavage, MA, LMHC, MAC, NCAC II

Friday, March 1, 2013 at 6:30 PM

Dealing with a patient relapse can be incredibly challenging for a therapist.  "Did I miss something?  Have I been enabling this behavior?  What could I have done?"  All of these are common feelings that can lead to a sense of helplessness and responsibility when working with chronic substance abusers.  In reality, though, relapse is a common phenomena in substance abuse treatment and recovery. The goal of this program is to help therapists working with this population to feel more equipped to deal positively with relapse when it occurs. This presentation will review common triggers for return to prior usage patterns, therapeutic stance in responding to a relapse, and conducting a relapse analysis to facilitate greater understanding of recovery needs.
In addition, strategies to assist a patient in identification of potential usage cues, as well as coping with cravings, will be reviewed.

Kevin Wadalavage, MA, LMHC, MAC, NCAC II, has worked in the substance abuse field since 1981 as a street worker, counselor, program director, trainer and administrator. He has trained on chemical dependency related topics to various human service professionals for over 25 years. He supervised two New York City outpatient addiction treatment programs which offered trilingual services to adolescents and adults and continues as a lecturer at Outreach Training Institute, the largest addiction counselor training program in New York State.

In addition to his Masters Degree in Counseling, he is a CASAC, a Masters Addictions Counselor, a National Certified Addictions Counselor and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor.

He was a founding Board member of the Institute for Professional Development in the Addictions and is a member of the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) Clinical Advisory Panel and their Gold Standard, Measurements Development and CASAC Curricula Committees.

Please Note: A $5 surcharge will apply for those paying at the door, but we suggest buying your ticket in advance as the event may reach capacity before the date of the presentation.
