About the session:

The recognition and treatment of rhythms is an important skill for practicing nurses.  This seminar incorporates rhythm recognition not only on rhythm strips, but also on the 12-lead for more complex rhythms.  The concepts of axis, QRS configuration, and concordance, are used to distinguish some of the wide complex dysrhythmias.  Simple explanations and easy methods of remembering are used to enhance retention of the material and enable the bedside professional to apply it in everyday practice.

Etiologies and treatment aspects of each rhythm are also included.  It is helpful, but not mandatory, if participants have a basic understanding of the 12-lead ECG prior to this session.

The following rhythms and treatment modalities will be covered:

  • Sinus dysrhythmia
  • Sinus arrest
  • Sinus block
  • Sick sinus syndrome
  • Junctional rhythms
  • Atrial fibrillation
  • Atrial flutter
  • Wandering atrial pacer
  • Atrial tachycardia
  • Atrial tach with block
  • AV blocks
  • Ventricular tachycardia
  • Ventricular fibrillation
  • Ventricular standstill
  • Torsades de Pointes
  • SA nodal reentry
  • AV nodal reentry
  • WPW syndrome
  • Aberration
  • Parasystole
  • Rate dependent BBB
  • Pacemaker rhythms

Objectives:

  • Describe the physiology and clinical significance of electrical generation and conduction in cardiac tissue
  • Identify the potential treatment options used in patients with dysrhythmias.
  • Recognize the rhythms associated with the sinus node and any clinical manifestations and treatment.
  • Verbalize an understanding of the rhythms originating from the junction, clinical manifestations, and appropriate treatment
  • Differentiate between the various heart blocks seen in the clinical setting, causes, and treatment modalities.
  • Verbalize an understanding of the rhythms originating from atrial tissue and appropriate treatment.
  • Verbalize the ability to recognize the characteristics of complex supraventricular dysrhythmias.
  • State the difference between the ventricular dysrhythmias and other wide complex tachycardias.
  • Verbalize the ability to recognize the characteristics of other wide complex dysrhythmias and clinical aspects to consider with the rhythms.
  • Recognize the various rhythm patterns that can be seen in patients with temporary or permanent pacemakers.

“This was a great review which will enable me to provide better care for my cardiac patients.  I finally understand some rhythms I had been having trouble with.”

“I enjoyed this class very much.  It was a great refresher of many rhythms commonly seen and then an invaluable explanation of other rhythms seen, but not necessarily recognized.  Reminded me of what I need to spend more time with.”

“Excellent instructor!  Extraordinary clinical knowledge with the ability to answer questions in a way that makes understanding easy.”
