In today’s Sports Section, 49er fans are looking for a GREAT Defense at the end of this season.

Those of us in the Disaster Preparedness also believe in a GREAT Defense, but all of the time. Here is a great opportunity to learn about how we can accomplish this.

Join Lt. Erica Arteseros and the Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT), with Reuben Hechanova, Co-Coordinator from the Inner Richmond Team and Battalion 7 & 8 Team Coordinators partner with the members of CAPSS program as they help to educate us and all citizens who live and work in San Francisco about the buildings we live and work in.

The County Fair Building (formerly the Hall of Flowers) is just inside GG Park @ 9th Avenue at Lincoln Way.

Presenters will include:

 Lt. Erica Arteseros, NERT Program Coordinator
Joining the Fire Department in 1997, Lt. Erica Arteseros has been the Program Coordinator for the SF Fire Department's Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT) since 2004. She supervises the training of people in NERT’s disaster preparedness and response classes and has expanded the advanced training classes offered to NERT graduates so volunteers can maintain skills. Lt. Arteseros has also worked extensively with City agencies, the private sector, and individual citizens in pre-disaster planning and training. In 2009, Lt. Arteseros became chair of the CA Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Workgroup, a group of CERT program coordinators throughout the state, who meet quarterly to share best practices, to coordinate CERT needs with state representatives, and to ensure that the state’s CERT curriculum is current.

Reuben Hechanova, Architect
Appointed by Mayor Gavin Newsom in 2008 to the Building Inspection Commission (BIC) that oversees policy and administrative governance of SF-Department of Building Inspection, Reuben served as the BIC-President in 2010, He helped to move the CAPSS (Citizen Action Plan for Seismic Safety) forward and stepped down from the BIC in March 2012. Currently in private practice. Professional practice in San Francisco for over 32 years include major architectural firms such as SOM-New York/Denver office; KMD; SMP;MBT; market real estate and non-profit housing developers. 

Laurence Kornfield, Policy Development
Chief Building Inspector in San Francisco for 20 years, Laurence has been active in earthquake hazard mitigation, response and recovery since the Loma Pieta earthquake in 1989. He initiated and oversaw San Francisco’s recently completed Community Action Plan for Seismic Safety (CAPSS), and is currently developing long-term implementation plans for that CAPSS project. Mr. Kornfield is active in policy development related to building performance, disability access, sustainability, and he has been the Special Assistant to City Administrator for Earthquake Safety Implementation; City and County of San Francisco; since May 2011.

 

Patrick Otelinni, Director of Earthquake Safety
Director since early 2012, Patrick is a certified building inspector and previously served on the Mayor’s Soft Story Task Force. Patrick understands San Francisco building issues, including codes, permitting and construction. Patrick's job is to implement a 30 year plan to reduce the city's most dangerous risks in a future earthquake, including retrofitting, soft-story buildings, private schools, and some concrete building. He will guide the Earthquake Safety implementation plan (ESIP) while implementing the recommendations of CAPSS, a multi-year study of San Francisco’s earthquake impacts and proposed safety strategies completed in 2010.
