Q: What is "Common Core State Standards"?

A: The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a state-led effort that established a single set of clear educational standards for kindergarten through 12th grade in English language arts and mathematics that was adopted by the state of Louisiana in 2010 and have already begun to go into effect in lower grades. The standards are designed to ensure that students graduating from high school are prepared to enter credit bearing entry courses in two or four year college programs or enter the workforce. The standards are clear and concise to ensure that parents, teachers, and students have a clear understanding of the expectations in reading, writing, speaking and listening, language and mathematics in school.

Young Audiences of Louisiana

For over 50 years Young Audiences of Louisiana (YALA) has upheld its promise to inspire, empower, and connect children and communities through education, arts, and culture.  This promise has led us to a holistic philosophy of “growing with the child.” Louisiana Wolf Trap for Early Literacy addresses the needs of infants and toddlers with research based arts activities.  This gives our youngest learners the boost they need to be successful academically and socially.  Our free afterschool and summer programs focus on emotional, social and academic growth for students in Kindergarten through 12th grade due to participation in high quality academics, mentoring and arts enrichment.  These initiatives provide many of our community’s most underserved children and youth with the spark to succeed in learning and in life.

YALA also supports schools and community organizations by providing professional development for classroom teachers, teaching artists, parents and advocates for the arts and education.

To further our mission YALA opened the first Young Audiences Charter School in August 2013.  The school, located in Jefferson Parish, connects the joys of discovery and creativity to give students the 21st Century skills they need to reach their full potential.
