We are pleased to announce Teaching Matters' Common Core Reading Series. This 5 part series will enable teachers to look closely at the most critical Common Core Reading Standards and create specific learning targets to address these standards. Teachers will learn new strategies and activities to support student reading aligned to the CCLS and will leave each workshop with a toolkit for addressing CCLS being implemented in schools now. Please see workshop dates and topics below:

Wednesday February 27 - Workshop 2 - Common Core Reading Series: Synthesizing Text – Teachers will analyze what it means to“synthesize text” and will deconstruct Common Core Reading Standard 7 and 9 in order to create learning targets aligned with these standards. Teachers will leave with an instructional strategy toolkit that supports students as they synthesize what they read in text, in order to achieve new insight and thinking.
Wednesday March 6 - Workshop 3 - Common Core Reading Series: Evaluating Arguments
Teachers will deconstruct Common Core Reading Standards 6 & 8 in order to create specific learning targets for teaching students how to comprehend and evaluate arguments. Teachers will leave with an instructional strategy toolkit for supporting students as they understand claims and supporting evidence and distinguish the point of view of authors.
Wednesday March 13 - Workshop 4 - Common Core Reading Series: Building Vocabulary – Teachers will learn more about the 30 million word gap prevalent in urban schools. By deconstructing Common Core Reading Standard 4, along with Common Core Language Standards, teachers will create specific learning targets to incorporate into units of study. Teachers will also learn instructional strategies aligned to the CCLS and that address students’ vocabulary gaps.
Wednesday March 20 - Workshop 5 - Common Core Reading Series: Text-dependent Questioning
Teachers will learn how to create and ask high-level questions of students that are dependent upon text and aligned toCommon Core Learning Standards. These questions will support teachers in formally and informally assessing mastery of the standards taught and can be integrated into all units of instruction.
