Event Details

Help Your Children to Learn How to Code.  Tampa Bay Area CoderDojo is a free program brought to you by mentors who are tech startup founders from the area.  These founding members of CoderDojo are gladly devoting their time and energy in the evenings on a workday so that children can understand the world around them a little better, and have a positive influence on society.

CAUTION: Dear Parents - When you REGISTER, please only use your name for sign-up.  We will know the seats you requested based on the number of tickets reserved by you.  Please DO NOT fill up your child's name on this form.

The session will be hour-long, but not in a classroom format.  Instead, the sessions will be more like jam-sessions.  Mentors will use the “Grandmother method” instead of teaching a curriculum, by focusing on admiring the productive stuff the kids do and achieve. CoderDojo's philosophy is that admiration and acknowledgement are the key to inspiration and creation of a learning context that is positive.

Mentors will encourage kids to ask each other for assistance and to google for answers. We will also encourage the more advanced kids to step up to be mentors as quickly as they can. Mentoring from within ensures our CoderDojo’s sustainability.

Here's a checklist for participation.  All children must be accompanied by

  • A print-out of the ticket
  • A laptop.
  • Download Scratch from scratch.mit.edu before you come, or we will show you how to do it.
  • A parent! (Very important).  Your parent must stay with you during the session.

The meeting room in the library has free wi-fi and you will receive instructions to get Internet access upon your arrival.

P.S.: If you are interested in mentoring, please send an email to tampabayarea.us [at] coderdojo [dot] com

CoderDojo Tampa Bay Area

Tampa Bay Area CoderDojo (see video by TBLC) draws its inspiration from CoderDojo in Dublin, Ireland (see video).  CoderDojos are free! Really FREE, free of charge, and there is no part of the global collaboration that wants to make money from you or the young people learning so there really is no catch.

Thanks are due to various mentors of Tampa Bay Area CoderDojo who spend time on a workday or a weekend to help kids get excited about computer programming!

The One Rule…

Be Cool!

The CoderDojo Promise…

Open Free Learning!

  • The CoderDojo Principles…
  • Our context is open, free, child-led, learning.
  • We are open source.
  • Child safety comes before everything except common sense.
  • Participation is always free of charge.
  • Playing and creating lead our learning and we share what we learn.
  • What works in an individual CoderDojo is shared, not enforced.
  • We collaborate and rely on each other.
  • Champions, mentors, parents and their kids are responsible for each other.
