About Market-Aligned Skills Training (MAST)

Market-Aligned Skills Training (MAST) equips disadvantaged urban youth with vocational skills to access jobs in high-growth industries, matching the demands of the local economy. So far more than 45,535 youth have been trained under the program, with 71% placement, in Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand, Punjab, Rajasthan and West Bengal.

Through its MAST program, AIF is training unemployed youth with a 10th-grade education for employment in high-growth sectors, matching the demands of local area economies. MAST’s goal is to train 100,000 youth across India by 2012. 45,535 youth have been trained with an average job placement rate of 71 per cent. India is experiencing two significant demographic transitions – its population under the age of 25 is growing rapidly relative to its aging population and its population is rapidly urbanizing. Therefore the economic productivity of urban youth is going to be critical for India’s future economic growth. Equipped with the right skills and access to markets, they can be powerful engines of economy. Left on the margins due to poor education and lack of capital, they can be a source of discontent and unrest and a drain on the economy. As the proportion of working age group of 15-59 years will increase steadily, India has the advantage of “demographic dividend”. Harnessing the demographic dividend through appropriate skill development efforts would provide an opportunity to achieve inclusion and productivity within the country. Large scale skill development is thus an imminent imperative.

About AIF

The American India Foundation (AIF) is the largest diaspora philanthropy organization focused on India and based out of the United States. Since inception, AIF has benefited more than 1.5 million people, by implementing programs through over 115 Indian non-governmental organizations.

AIF works through strategic philanthropy, with its investment decisions guided by deep experience and innovative thinking. We identify system-changing solutions that benefit some of the most marginalized people in India and invest resources and knowledge to create opportunity and hope. We bring together a community of like-minded donors, who by pooling their resources, are creating an exponential impact. And we do all of this in an efficient, effective and transparent manner, keeping our administrative costs to a minimum and providing the highest value to all of our stakeholders.

The AIF Bay Area Young Professionals (AIFBAYP) has raised over $65,000 in just two years for underprivileged youth in India. We’ve created a great deal of awareness for various causes and helped bring the Bay Area South Asian community together. We’ve thrown dozens of sold-out events year around and we've only just begun...
