Course Description: 
Brain injury is a complex diagnosis affecting individuals of all ages and causing a varied presentation based on injury. This course will start with a brief review of the basics in brain injury to set the stage for a deeper look at primary and secondary impairments, pharmacological management, and rehabilitation for a holistic approach to patient management from ICU to return to community.

Course Objectives:
By the end of this course, students will be able to:

• Identify neuroanatomical pathology related to clinical presentation
• Identify primary and secondary effects of brain injury
• Discuss medical and pharmacological management relative to acute brain injury and promoting recovery
• Discuss complications following brain injury and the goals of rehabilitation in minimizing and/or managing these
• Review issues related to the aging brain injury
• Explain presentation and treatment strategies of all levels of brain injury using the Rachos Los Amigos scale
• Identify underlying impairments affecting primary functional limitations observed as well as strategies to address and treat

Intended audience:
PTs, OTs, PTAs, or OTAs with exposure to or interest in brain injury rehabilitation. Course will cover acute, sub-acute, post-acute, and community re-entry phases of recovery.

CEUs:
*12 contact hours (1.2 CEUs) for PTs, OTs, PTAs, or OTAs

Currently Brooks has four post-professional education programs including a multidisciplinary Geriatric Residency (includes residents from OT, Nursing, SLP, and PT), a PT Neurologic Residency, a PT Orthopaedic Residency, and an Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy Fellowship.  Brooks Rehabilitation offers over 25 post-professional continuing courses each year that includes a wide variety of course offerings for multiple disciplines and a variety of specialty practice areas.  The speakers include both nationally renowned experts from around the country as well as nationally recognized clinical experts that currently practice within Brooks.
