This workshop is the first step in becoming a Citizen Forester Team Leader and earning that coveted red vest. Team Leader candidates will learn how to select and prepare a tree planting site and properly plant the tree to ensure its survival. We will also cover techniques critical to maintaining tree health, including mulching and watering.
After lunch, attendees will break into groups and test their new skills as we plant 25, 2-inch caliper trees weighing up to 200 pounds each on the grounds of Catholic University.
Successful completion of this course qualifies you as a Citizen Forester. To become a Team Leader, candidates must participate in two Community Tree Plantings during the Spring 2014 season, where they will work with a mentor to practice what they learned in this workshop. Once approved by a Team Leader Mentor, the candidate will be eligible to lead a team of 3 to 4 novice volunteers at a Casey Trees Community Tree Planting.
Take the Red Line to the Brookland-CUA stop and walk a short distance to the University. The closest Metrobus stop is at the Brookland-CUA Metro station (served by the H2, H4, H6, G8, R4 and 80). The Metropolitan Branch Bike Trail runs beside the Catholic University campus along John McCormack Drive, NE and Capital Bikeshare stations are located at various locations around the city, including outside of Union Station and at the Brookland/CUA Metrorail station. Free parking will also be available on site, follow the Casey Trees banners to approved parking.
The class will begin indoors in the Aquinas Hall auditorium on campus before participants move outside to plant. An email with more details will be sent to participants in the week preceding the workshop.
