Advanced Stormwater Technologies: Course #0000401

ThirstyDuck, Ltd. is pleased to announce its model ER-200 buoyant flow control device (BFD) has been approved for use by the Florida Department of Transportation on production projects with the approval of the State Hydraulics Office.

  • Buoyant Flow Control Device Types (single restriction, dual restriction and hybrid types)
  • Development of rating curves (stage vs. discharge) for each type BFD
    • Weir flow to orifice flow transition
    • Determining the point of restriction
    • Free discharge condition
    • Tailwater conditions
    • Spreadsheet/tabular solutions
  • Modeling techniques
    • Inserting rating curves into ICPR, PONDS, HydroCad, TR-20, HEC-HMS
    • Dynamic tailwater modeling (families of rating curves)
    • Manhole and pipe losses (inclusion in rating curve vs. individual nodes and reaches)
    • Using the constant flow device option in HydroCad
  • Factors affecting system savings
    • Inflow vs. outflow rate
    • system flux
    • tailwater
  • Construction Details
    • Box type and size
    • Inverted siphons
    • Emergency overflow devices
    • Buoyancy and ballasting
    • Vegetation control
    • Venting and Air release

 The course objectives will be:

  • Understand how the ER type buoyant flow control device operates
  • Understand how the ER type BFD can be used to minimize detention volume
  • Understanding the device variations and identification of situations suited for each variation
  • Learn to compute the stage vs. discharge relationship (rating curve) for each device type variation in free discharge and tailwater conditions
  • Learn to insert rating curves into popular modeling software such as ICPR, Ponds, HydroCad
  • Learn to model the ER type BFD for single and multiple storm events.
  • Identify design conditions and other factors which affect efficiency and potential system savings
  • Learn to calculate required buoyancy
  • Understand and identify construction design details required for proper operation and maintenance.
