The last RLC Bluegrass Thursday of March is Madness! City Mouse AND Caleb Warren & the Perfect Gentlemen AND Kristina Murray (welcome back to ATL!) AND Reverend Hylton & the Devil's Hands!
City Mouse is the collective spirit of Atlanta-based songwriters, Brian Revels and Michael Hudgins. Born in the latter part of 2012 amongst the trash heaps and decay-filled dumpsters of the Big Peach's outskirts, City Mouse is a bastard-spawn of too many nights of drunken conversations about a shared sense of appeal for the Americana movement and nostalgia of the past (in general).
One lucky day, these rat bastards stumbled into the Tin Roof Cantina to find Jenna Mobley sawin' a fiddle in half with Atlanta-folk badasses, Sailing to Denver. And after a few songs and few beers they worked up the courage to get a name and number (for business reasons, of course).
Generally accompanied by a banjo (plus Brian's overzealous, tempo-tempting footstomps), a guitar, and a double-bass, played by the talented Miss Mobley, the Mouse's lyrics are the words that keep these brokeass, hopeless romantics spending all their tip money on microphones and strings.
That is only to say that they mean them. And hope you can relate in this collective human experience. This rat race.
Caleb Warren & the Perfect Gentlemen are a string jazz, ragtime blues band consisting of old-time American musicians from North Georgia. This isn't the blues your Grannies and Poppas listened to.
The road from Atlanta, Georgia to the Colorado Front Range is a long one. It winds through most of America, through plains and river deltas, cities and farmland. The trip is marked and shaped by the places through which you wind.
Kristina Murray's debut album, Unravelin', is as unique and varied as this journey. Backed by seasoned musicians, Murray touches on musical influences from across the spectrum, from the Allman Brothers and Alan Jackson of her native Georgia, to all forms of country and Americana. Fans of the Nashville, Austin, and Bakersfield sounds will find a home in her songs of love and loss, traveling and drinking.
Unravelin', made up of eleven original songs, was recorded by Darren Radach at Stout Studios in Fort Collins, Colorado. Murray's strong and soulful voice is accented by her band, carrying the songs with driving beats and soaring pedal steel and fiddle. This strong debut album promises a great future for the Georgia native whose journey west is reflected in her music, both rooted in tradition and willing to leave the highway to get lost in the wild.
After three and a half years of playing in the jam band 3DC, Reverend Hylton has gone back to his roots. Forming an Americana Outlaw band with band mates Matt Humphry on drums, Jared Slyman on bass and bringing in the electric slide styles of Kyle Prinzbach. Together they are Reverend Hylton and the Devil's Hands. A sound that showcases Rev. Hylton’s relatable songs of traveling, heartache, and addiction. A mix of rowdy country tunes and heartfelt ballads. So watch out 'cause you might just find yourself singing along or doing a little shit kickin' boot stompin’!
