Event Details

This event is a regional collaboration between the Ohio State Medical Association, Ohio Osteopathic Association, Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Adena Health System designed to address Opioid Pain medicine abuse, which is rampant in Southern Ohio, based on date from healthcare, law enforcement, public health and the coroner system.  This education will give the prescriber tools to treat patients in pain,  practical appoaches to meet precriber obligations outlined by the State Medical Board of Ohio, and help patients receive appropriate assessment, treatment, and monitoring of the use of opioid pain medicines.

OVERALL OBJECTIVES:

  • Identify what constitutes an appropriate assessment of a patient with chronic or acute pain and follow best practice guidelines for treatment.
  • Recognize the impact of House Bill 93 and OARRS in relation to chronic pain.
  • Monitor patients being treated with long-term controlled substances and identify when further consultation is needed.
  • Identify the prevalence and demographics of chronic pain.
  • Define lawful and best practice medical managment and monitoring of extended release and Long Acting opioid Analgesics (LAA) through risk evaluation and mitigation strategies (REMS).


INTENDED AUDIENCE:  Medication prescribers, Anesthesiology, Pain, Family Physicians, OB/GYN,  Occupational Health, Emergency, Urgent Care, Internists, Hospitalists, Physican Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses.

House Bill 93 and OARRS - Terry Johnston, DO

  • Recognize the purpose of HB 93.
  • Develop strategies to be compliant with HB 93.
  • Review proper interpretation and use of OARRS.

 
Ohio Revised Code - Kort Gronbach, MD

  • Review Ohio Medical Boards current RC expectations.
  • Identify the proper patients for long term opiate therapy.
  • Implement a proper clinical care program for the chronic pain patient.

Long Acting Analgesics and REMS - Mark Malinowski, DO

  • Recognize appropriate patients for the initiation of long acting opioids.
  • Recognize how to begin long acting opioid therapy, modify dosing, and proper discontinuation.
  • Develop an understanding of how to manage ongoing opioid therapy.
  • Discuss the risks and safe use, storage, and disposal of long acting opioids and effectively communicate with patients and caregivers.
  • Identify general and product-specific drug information of long acting opioids.

  • Realize the prevalence of chronic pain.
  • Recognize the impact of chronic pain.
  • Monitor the complex needs of the chronic pain patient.

ACCREDITATION STATEMENTS AND DISCLOSURE

Adena Health System is accredited by the Ohio State Medical Association to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Adena Health System designates this educational activity for 4  AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM.

 Adena Health System is approved as an accredited CME sponsor by the Amercian Osteopathic Association.  This program is approved for 4 hours of AOA Category 1-A credit.   

The Ohio Administrative Code 4731-29-01 standards and procedures for the operation of a pain management clinic state that physicians who own and/or work in pain management clinics must complete at least 20 hours of category 1 continuing medical education (CME) in pain medicine every two years. Time spent in this activity is eligible towards this requirement.

The Ohio State Chiropractic Board designates this CE for 4 DC category credits. 

 4 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits are applicable toward continuing education for nursing licensure.

The Adena Institute for Learning is housed in the PACCAR Medical Education Center, the leading education facility located on the campus of Adena Regional Medical Center in Chillicothe, Ohio. The Institue is comprised of multiple Accademies that support Adena's mission "To Heal, To Educate, To Care" by providing evidence based, timely and effective education to physicians and staff.

Opened in September 2008, the PACCAR Medical Education Center is a dream that became a reality thanks to the cooperation of Adena, local, state, and federal officials, and the community. Through philanthropic grants, our community raised over $5 million to support the construction of the PACCAR Center while Adena Health System contributed $10 million.
