Masterworks Sing-a-Long

Our Sing-a-Longs are a fun way to perform a favorite work, or a great first step in learning new music. We begin with a brief rehearsal of the choral sections, break for tea or coffee, and then sing straight through the piece with organ accompaniment. Scores provided, or bring your own!
  • August 12th: Fauré Requiem
  • Special time for this event: 6:30–9:30 pm

Solfège Bootcamp

Until the 11th century, the only way to learn a melody was to have someone teach it to you, since there was no way to write it down. Learn how the system of naming the notes (do, re, mi...) was developed and why mastering these syllables can help you read unfamiliar music at sight. Each session is designed as a standalone event, so attend as many or as few as you want!

Mondays, 7–9 pm

  • July 8: Music before 1600
  • July 15: Music since 1900
  • July 22: Music 1600–1910
Rhythmic Training for Choral Singers
Choral conducting guru Robert Shaw would always say "the right note at the wrong time is the wrong note."
Rhythm is the foundation of all choral singing technique. This workshop will help singers internalize the pulse, understand simple and complex rhythms, and conduct basic beat patterns. Attend either session or both.

Mondays, 7–9 pm
  • July 29
  • August 5

Beyond Square Notes: chant and the Graduale Novum

Every aspect of choral singing (from rhythm and pitch to technique and expression) benefits from the study of Gregorian chant. Unfortunately, this ancient art form is most frequently performed from out-of-date 19th century editions. This three-part Workshop will help unlock the mysteries of the 9th and 10th century chant manuscripts using examples from the 2011 Graduale Novum in new transcriptions by chant specialist Sven Edward Olbash of euouae.com.

Mondays, 7–9 pm

  • June 17th–July 1st

Lacuna Arts

In medieval music, a lacuna is a gap or missing section in a particular manuscript. Lacuna Arts bridges the gap between performers, audiences, and the local community in the San Francisco Bay Area. Our mission is to promote excellence in vocal music through performance, education, and community outreach.
