About our Designated Charity : The Primo Center
The Primo Center is a twenty-two bed interim housing program located in the West Garfield community of Chicago. For the past 27 years, the Primo Center has provided year-round shelter, meals and support to thousands of families as they work toward achieving goals of self-sufficiency and permanent housing.
The mission of the Primo Center is to empower women and children to become productive, responsible and independent members of their community. This is accomplished by:
- Providing transitional housing, counseling and support services to homeless women and their children.
- Supporting mothers with their education and training efforts to find and retain employment.
- Strengthening families by assisting mothers in improving their parenting skills.
- Delivering all programs and services in an atmosphere of spirituality and mutual respect.
The Primo Center staff and its Board of Directors have focused its efforts on women and children because we are only one of three shelters in the city of Chicago that exclusively serves women and children. It is important to remember that in 2006, of the approximately 74,000 homeless people in Chicago, a combined 46% of them were children and youth, according to the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless. This kind opportunity to showcase the Primo Center will indeed assist our efforts
