Challenge:  Develop innovative tool(s) that help Chicagoans become more financially capable and/or build capacity for the organizations that serve them

Many Chicagoans, particularly those who are low-income and underserved, struggle with:

  • Keeping track of their money and building savings
  • Monitoring their credit history and debt
  • Accessing affordable and non-predatory financial products

To help such clients get on their feet and achieve financial stability, local community organizations often provide the following services:

  • One-on-one financial counseling, in which coaches periodically meet with clients to set financial plans and monitor progress
  • Tax preparation assistance, where volunteers help clients file taxes and claim tax credits
  • Financial workshops, which cover topics like opening bank accounts and establishing credit history

How to participate

On the first day of the hackathon, non-profit organizations that work in financial capability will present on the challenges that their organizations and clients face. Working individually or in small project teams, you will be tasked with developing an application or tool that addresses the challenges presented. Food and drink will be provided.

At the end of the second day, a panel of judges will select a winner, who will receive the following:

  • $1500 cash prize
  • Participation in the Cities for Financial Empowerment (CFE) national hackathon as Chicago’s representative
  • In addition, the winning app may be made available to major cities across the country

Why you should participate

The financial empowerment hackathon is a unique opportunity to:

  • Pitch your app to local and national judges that work in tech, government, and non-profit worlds
  • Compete against winning teams in San Francisco, New York City, and Miami
  • Develop an app that can be of great use to Chicago and beyond
