Two years after John announced on our honeymoon that he wanted to quit his job and "do something in cheese," we unlocked the front door to our very own cheese shop on February 11, 2010. We've been asked many times since, "Why a Cheese Shop?" and the answer is simple. After putting ourselves through cheese bootcamps, running a cheese club out of our house, attending cheese conferences, interning for French affineur Herve Mons, journeying through Europe, and eating our way through thousands of tasty cheese morsels, we honed in on our true passions: eating, talking, traveling, and spending time together. Over a bottle of wine one evening, we realized that working behind a cheese case would bring them all together.
Our Cheese Classes are an intimate way to get to know cheese. We've hosted hundreds of "Cheese 101: The Seven Styles of Cheese" tastings (which are ongoing). Now, we're honored to host our cheesemaker idols at our "Cheese 201: Meet the Cheesemaker" series! Each of these classes features a guest cheesemaker who, alongside us(!), will walk you through a tasting of 6-7 of his/her cheeses, depending on availability. For this event we are thrilled to have Judy Schad of Capriole join us all the way from Indiana! Her exceptional, award-winning goat cheeses run the gambit from ash-ripened to washed-rind to bourbon-soaked to decadently creamy and mild. Don't miss this rare opportunity to meet the legendary woman behind some of our cheesemongers' favorite cheeses! The cheese tasting will be accompanied by olives, nuts, and Easy Tiger bread. We'll also bring out a number of additional pairings like jams and chutneys, depending on that evening's cheese selection. Expect to not only taste some excellent cheese but to learn about the history of the cheesemaker and his/her operation, see a simplified cheesemaking demonstration, and hear about other hot topics affecting the glorious world of cheese!
Note: You may choose to separately purchase our recommended wine or beer pairings from the Cheese Shop prior to the class the day of the event. Should you choose to bring your own wine or beer, there is a $4 set-up fee. At the end of each class, we'll give you and your guests time to mingle and enjoy the Cheese House, while we cut-to-order any cheese from the class that you'd like to purchase so you can re-create the tasting at home. Personal delivery of cheese directly to your chair. Does it get any better than that?
A couple RSVP reminders: Each "Cheese 201" class is $40 per person (plus processing fees). Once you click to purchase tickets, you will only have 5 minutes to complete your order. To pay with a gift card, click "show other payment options" under the "Order Now" icon. Once purchased, tickets are non-refundable and non-trasnsferable to other events. You will receive a confirmation email which you should bring along with you on class night. We allow individuals to reserve up to 4 seats (if your party is larger, contact us for information on private parties and tastings!). If you're unable to purchase a ticket, please sign up for our waitlist (once per person); we are often able to accomodate guests off this list. Lastly, remember that you can come into the Cheese Shop anytime and taste cheese for free. Our cheesemongers are here to guide you through the case and answer any questions.
