This year, the United Nations declared September 5th to be the first International Day of Charity, in commemoration of the death of Blessed Mother Teresa fifteen years ago. The witness of her life continues to influence our world, reminding us that poverty is not the lack of material things but an absence of meaning and hope. In Mexico, the women and men of the non-profit organization Crecemos (meaning Growing Together in Spanish), have similarly let their lives be shaped by solidarity with others. In 2013, Crecemos celebrates its 20 years of dedicated service. On this occasion, AVSI-USA has invited María Socorro del Río, Executive Director of Crecemos, and Fr. Herald Brock, of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, to help us understand what it means that charity is the law of life, a need intrinsic to my nature and ultimately to my happiness. Can charity be the road to freedom for my life and for those I meet, here and now?
This event will be a festive celebration of Crecemos and the rich cultural traditions of Oaxaca, Mexico. Guests will delight in the sights, sounds and tastes of Mexico that will enliven the stories of lives changed by a method that centers on the person and starts from the positive within any circumstance.
Speakers will probe the reason for celebration. Their witnesses of solidarity with the poor and disadvantaged will show how charity is a path to experience true freedom, possible also for you and me.
