Event Details

This one-hour training for attorneys, investigators and human resource professionals offers an overview of the California Family Rights Act, Pregnancy Disability Leave and other leaves, including “Accommodation” Leave under the Fair Employment and Housing Act, Military Family Leave, and Paid Family Leave. Discussion will cover rights and obligations of employers and employees and overlapping laws.


Guest Presenter Bernadette O’Brienis the managing attorney of Floyd, Skeren & Kelly, LLP’s employment law department and a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR). She provides advice and counsel to employers, human resource administrators, risk managers and claims adjusters on numerous workplace topics including policy development and implementation; employee discipline/workplace investigations; the prevention of workplace claims for discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and/or wrongful termination; wage and hour compliance; the crossover issues related to workers' compensation and the Family and Medical Leave Act/Americans with Disabilities Act. Ms. O’Brien is author of the popular LexisNexis publication Labor and Employment in California: A Guide to Employment Laws, Regulations and Practices and co-author of California Unemployment Insurance and Disability Compensation Programs. Domini Pham is a Senior Staff Counsel for the Department of Fair Employment and Housing. Before joining the Department, Ms. Pham worked on discrimination and civil rights claims at the Maine Human Rights Commission. She has litigated state and federal cases in the areas of employment, business and insurance coverage. Ms. Pham has worked in the private and public sectors, including serving as Deputy Attorney General at the California Attorney General’s Office. She graduated from Vanderbilt University and holds a Juris Doctor degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.

Jacob Barak is a Civil Rights Fellow at the Department of Fair Employment and Housing. He graduated from the University of California, Irvine School of Law in 2013.

Francisco Balderramais a Civil Rights Fellow at the Department of Fair Employment and Housing. He graduated from the University of California, Irvine School of Law in 2013. He earned his bachelor's degree in Liberal Studies at California State University, Fullerton.

Department of Fair Employment and Housing

The Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH or Department), California’s civil rights agency. The Department takes in, investigates, conciliates, mediates and prosecutes violations under the Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA), Disabled Persons Act, Unruh Civil Rights Act and Ralph Civil Rights Act. The DFEH has five California offices in Elk Grove (Headquarters), Bakersfield, Fremont, Fresno and Los Angeles.
