Event Details

Margaret Morford is the CEO of the HR Edge, Inc., an international management consulting and training company.  Her clients have included Lockheed Martin, Chevron, Time Warner, U.S. Secret Service, Sara Lee Foods among many other national and global companies.  Previous to owning her own company, Margaret was Sr. Vice President, Human Resources Consulting for a national consulting firm out of Winston-Salem, North Carolina.  She has a BS degree from the University of Alabama and a JD degree from the Vanderbilt University School of Law.  She has worked as an attorney, specializing in employment law as well as been Vice President of Human Resources for three large companies.  She is the author of the business books, "Management Courage - Having the Heart of a Lion" and "The Hidden Language of Business - Workplace Politics, Power & Influence."  She has served on the Board of Directors for various corporations and charities.

A representative from Kansas Commerce will facilitate a discussion of the Central Kansas WorkReady Corridor, a 5-County Workforce initiative affecting the following counties: Harvey, Marion, McPherson, Reno and Saline.  Through successful collaborations, the mission of the Central Kansas WorkReady Corridor is to be an economic development catalyst, striving to ensure business and industry in our region have the skilled workforce needed to succeed.  Participants will have the opportunity to listen to an overview of the program and hear from employers on how it has improved their hiring practices and positively affected their bottom line.

As the labor pool shrinks, employees will examine more carefully the people for which they are willing to work.  More and more the type of management that exists within an organization will become the deciding factor for whether the organization will be able to retain its current employees as well as attract new ones.  This presentation differentiates leadership skills from management characteristics and asks participants to answer eight hard-hitting questions about their ability to lead others.  The information will revolutionize thinking about leadership and the way people need to be hired and manged in the future.

Accomplishing the goals and objectives of any organization requires more than just smart employees who work hard.  It requires savvy employees who know how to forge alliances and avoid animosities in order to be effective.  Participants identify which of the rules of "positive politics" they are most likely to violate as well as obtain guidelines for being smart about their own conduct, about their business communication, about their relationships with co-workers and about their relationship with their supervisor.  In addition, they learn numerous ways to recognize who really holds power and has influence and how to tap into the power structure within any organization

This conference has been submitted to HRCI for review for credit hours toward PHR and SPHR certification.
