Special July Workshop

Interested in learning the basics of using census data in nonprofit development and grant proposals? Join this FREE special workshop with the Grant Professionals Association’s Los Angeles County Chapter on Wednesday, July 16, from 9:00am to 11:30am at the Grantsmanship Center when special guest Luz Castillo, Data Dissemination Specialist of the U.S. Census Bureau, leads a presentation on census concepts and geography, navigating the census website, and understanding census data products. Learn how to access the most current census data on population, race/ethnicity, income, poverty, education, language spoken at home and many other socioeconomic topics using the new and enhanced American FactFinder. Together, we will share best practices for using that data in better proposals. The Grantsmanship Center is located downtown in the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce Building at 350 S. Bixel Street, Suite 110, in Los Angeles. Special note: This is an extended roundtable, one time only. The workshop is interactive. WiFi is available: Please plan to bring your laptop, iPad, or other devices used to access the internet. Monthly roundtables of the GPA Los Angeles Chapter are FREE to attend. Coffee and refreshments will be provided at no charge. Street and metered parking is available or you can park in the building lot for a $6 fee. Anyone with an interest in the grants profession is invited to attend.

Luz Castillo

Luz Castillo is an Information Services Specialist with the United States Census Bureau. One of her major responsibilities is making Census data accessible and user friendly to new and existing data users. She informs community based organizations, business owners, chambers of commerce, local governments, local media and educational organizations about Census data concepts and programs and provides hands-on-training on how to access data through the Census website. The most rewarding part of her job is giving community and business leaders access to data that will help them develop their business and marketing plans, understand the demographics in their trade area, examine local market trends and ultimately assist them in strengthening and expanding their businesses.
