John Muir turns 175 on April 21, the day before Earth Day 2013. That afternoon Cool Davis invites the community to a slideshow talk on “John Muir: the Writer, Scientist, and Public Figure” by noted local author Kim Stanley Robinson. Robinson accompanies his talk with stunning photographs chosen from his years of backpacking trips in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
Robinson will share Muir’s personal story and examine how he translated a writing career into astonishing feats of public policy. He touches upon what insights John Muir can provide us for effective environmental action now.
While the adults learn about John Muir, Nature’s Theater guides will escort the children ages 4-10 outside for an adventure outing. A character meets the kids, sets up a story, and walks with them as the story progresses, introducing playful activities characters, and lessons in nature.
In addition, Cool Davis will present the 2013 Eco-Hero Awards to community members who model how to incorporate sustainable practices into their civic and everyday lives and implement new ways to live lightly with a lower carbon footprint, the Climate Solution Awards and the Cool Davis Awards.
A reception follows with birthday cake and cool party favors for all! Guests who bring their own snack container and/or walk, bike or ride the bus earn a chance to win cool prizes!
“Birthday gifts” to further Cool Davis’ environmental work are appreciated. Suggested donations: $5-10.
