Event Details

Despite decades of work and hundreds of billions of dollars invested in research, cancer remains a largely incurable disease that, in the U.S. alone, takes a life every minute of every day.  If scientists managed to put man on the moon and split the atom decades ago, why have they still failed to find real cures for cancer?

This presentation will provide an overview of how cancer research works today, while explaining that our lack of cures is mostly due to a serious lack of scientific innovation.  The presentation will explain how barriers to innovation are introduced at every level of scientific research including how we fund research, how we conduct it, how we share it, and finally how we commercialize it.  The presentation will conclude by arguing that science desperately needs the skill sets of places like Silicon Valley, and that the cure to cancer will come once entrepreneurs and developers join the fight.
