Event Details

Can you think of another creative instrument in which it is acceptable to put in AUTO? Would you like to hear a guitar in AUTO? Would you put a paint brush in AUTO? Would you put a camera in AUTO? Where is the soul of the artist?

Let’s face it, the camera that each of us hold today are nothing short of a supercomputer. They’re an engineering marvel. Yet, we still manage to take terrible pictures with them! To be a photographer, not just a camera operator, we are required to make decisions. Aperture, shutter speed, focal length, composition, timing, etc. Make, being the operative word. We become a photographer when we make decisions, when we make a picture, not take one. When we place the camera in Auto mode, or P mode (P stands for unProfessional - the un is silent) we instantly relinquish all creative control. What are the odds that the engineers who designed these cameras had exactly the same vision you did for the very scene you are witnessing?

The very first step in making pictures, in realizing your unique creative vision, is to take back control. This Workshop is designed to help you do just that: to take back control of your camera. You’ll learn about each and every dial, menu item, adjustment, dial switch and lever and then you’ll learn why you’ll never need most of them. Automation is not a bad thing, and it would be a shame not to take advantage of the power of these new cameras. The real key is to maintain manual control over settings that affect the aesthetics of our image and automatate those that do not. The trick is in knowing the difference.

After this class, there will be no guess work, no hoping you got the shot, no excuses! The best piece of gear you have at your disposal is you and your unique and creative vision. After this class, your camera won’t be making pictures, you will.

Requirements: Bring your camera!

About the Presenter:
Clifford Pickett is professional commercial photographer, event photographer and educator based in NYC. He first picked up a camera while spending a year traveling through Europe after having earned his MBA early. Like many travelers, that passion for seeing and experiencing the world is precisely what ignited the spark for photography. Clifford has spent all of his time since learning how to see and capture the world with the fresh eyes that traveling affords. He hasn't been shooting for 40 years, he hasn't been alive for 40 years. He hasn't been classically trained in the fine arts either. He is entirely self taught, through books, workshops, seminars, DVD's and real life, it is this that perhaps may be his greatest asset, the ability to relate to the amateur photographer. Not having been so far removed, it is this understanding that allows him to help his students see through the cloud of misinformation and confusion and marketing spins to find real answers to questions from those who share the same passion for the world, and need to capture and share it, that he does. Leveraging both the business and photographic skills he has developed while managing a private testing laboratory, he recently is the owner of a photography company specializing in the construction industry and a commercial video production company. His corporate clients include Estée Lauder, Sephora and Clinique.
